Shaw & Staggs family Cherokee Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri

May 28, 2015 by Michelle L. Leave a Comment

I am looking for anyone who is from this line. Trying to research my Cherokee genealogy. I have hit brick walls. My great-great Grandparents were Mahala Staggs & Stephen P. Shaw both born in Parke County Indiana (their parents were from Tennessee & Kentucky in the Early 1830’s). Their son was my great-grandfather, John A. Shaw who married Martha McFarland. They lived in Montgomery County, Missouri. I have been unable to find some family members(ancestors), plus the Native American connection on any records so far. We were always told about our Cherokee heritage by my parents and aunts (on dad’s side (Shaw, Staggs). I have done 2 DNA tests & the results show a little less than 1/4th Native American, the rest being East Asian & Caucasian. I am confused as to why I can’t find my Native American ancestors (they listed themselves as white when it wasn’t accurate). How can this be? Would appreciate any help.Has anyone run into this issue in their research?
