I am adopted and was told that I was Cherokee, possibly Choctaw, and of course Scottish, Irish, or English. I got to met my biological uncle on my dad’s side, my Cherokee connection, who showed me a very old photo of my Great something grandfather. Chief Clarke was written on the bottom. He had a war bonnet and I believe a chest plate on and was standing in front of an old vehicle which I see as like a Model A or T type but could’ve been anything manufactured in that time. It was a brief meeting to which I didn’t get story time. I wish I knew more, but I don’t. I don’t even know the region Chief Clarke was in at the time of the picture. What’s worse as far as research goes is that the Cherokee line is my paternal grandmother’s side, so she took on her husband’s surname, Wolfe. I’m not in contact with my uncle and both my biological dad and paternal grandmother have passed. I don’t know my grandmother’s first or maiden name, so I can’t even trace beyond her. I do know my dad’s first and last name and where he died, but not where he was born or where my grandmother was born. I only have a memory of a photo with, “Chief Clarke” scribbled below a Cherokee man standing proudly in regalia, stark in contrast to the piece of modernization behind him that serves as a reminder of ever changing times. I want so badly for my pride to have a direction. The Choctaw side is believed to be on my paternal grandfather’s side, but has not been confirmed as far as I can remember from so long ago.
