Also suspect my TN Carter was Cherokee. He apparently went to CA abt. 1860 to the Sutter Mines. Any connections? This was John Carter (his g.son Andy also went to CA). John was b. in AL, & his father was supposed to have been Richard Carter. I know that in 1956, a friend brought his room-mate in college in KY to our house to visit. His name was Richard Carter & his father was a chief of one of the tribes at that time. I have talked to my friend & he confirmed that Richard is now a chief. I have not been able to locate him.
