Selah Winnie Mumford

December 29, 2022 by patd 2 Comments

If the genealogy is correct, Selah Winnie (1767-1836), a Cherokee, married Jesse G Mumford (1740-1835) and a Benjamin Gilstrap (1767-1805). She would be my 5th great grandmother. She was born in Craven County, NC and died in Randolph county, Missouri.

I descend from the Gilstrap line. Gilstrap to Trewhitt to Long to Hensley for three generations to me.

I’m interested in learning more about this family line – stories, photos, dates, etc.

If anyone is related to Selah Winnie, please correspond with me.

Thank you in advance.

Hi, If what I have found so far is correct, then I am also descended from Selah “Winnie” Mumford. I have her also as “Celia”. She is listed on Family Search under FS# LXNF=DMW as Celia Selah Winnaford Mumford.
She would be my 5th Great Grandmother and from her are my lines of (Benjamin Gilstrap & Winniford Mumford), (Benjamin E Gilstrap and Elizabeth Daugherty), (Mary Daugherty Gilstrap and Isaac W Kessinger,) then Christopher Columbus Kessinger, John Thomas Kessinger, My Mother and then Myself, Mary Annette Pratt Stilwell

It seems a mystery with Selah, but I ran across a William Bow Bowe as father to Selah’s father (listed only as Cherokee Chief) who was married to a Sarah (Overton). both out of Pasquotank County, North Carolina. They had listed nine children: Parthenia Overton, Robert Bowe, Frank Mulatto Bowe, Rachel Overton, Jack Spaniard Bowe, Titus Bowe, Samuel Bowe and Spanial Bowe (female). Some use and enter-changed their names of Bowe, Bow and Overton. Not sure any of this is accurate and I am researching to find documentation to verify.
Could Bowe be another way of the surnames Bowls, Bole, Bow??
I live in NW Arkansas about 30 min. from OK and once I have some information, I plan a trip to Talequah, OK to look at the books there.

I am looking for any one with more or accurate documented information to show Selah was Native American and Cherokee and also if she is on any of the Rolls.

    Thanks,
    Mary Annette Pratt Stilwell

      Hi Mary,

I’ve been researching the Benjamin Gilstrap family for a supplemental application for the DAR Patriot Peter Gilstrap. A librarian in St Louis found a marriage record for Benjamin Gilstrap and Mary Mumford in 1788 in Duplin Co., NC. I can share this with you if you’d like. Most records I’ve found show Benjamin and Winny married in St Louis in 1788. This doesn’t make sense since most records show their children were born in NC. Could Winny have been named Mary Winny or Mary Winnaford? Is this a different Benjamin Gilstrap? In the same genealogical journal Lewis Gilstrap and Elizabeth Maxwell’s marriage information is shown in 1790 in Duplin Co. I believe Benjamin had a brother named Lewis. Benjamin did work on freighters on the Mississippi River, so I suppose he could have met Winny elsewhere and brought her back to and. However, I will say I had a librarian look for me for marriage records in St Louis and nothing was found for Benjamin and Winny there.

I show that Selah Mumford and Winny Mumford were sisters. Selah married a Bright Gilstrap. Bright was a brother to Benjamin Gilstrap. Selah and Bright raised Benjamin and Winny’s children after she died according to family stories.

I can’t find any information about Selah or Winny being Native American, but wanted you to see some of what I’ve found so far. If you’d like to correspond on this family please let me know how I can reach you.

      Thanks,

      Pat D in NC
