[The following is an informal, unpublished history written by a grandchild of Noah Shelton Cotton and Lucretia Spurgeon. I haven’t backed up any of this with primary records but I’m happy to see that you have some dates and that the names/relationships are pretty close with what is listed below. I would like to know more about this “Bluebird” or “Sarah Bluebird Crouch” person.]
James Cotton was sent to America as a missionary by the Church of England to convert the Indians to Christianity about the year of 1767. He married Bluebird, the daughter of a Cherokee Indian chief about the year of 1769 and they had one son Caleb, born about 1776. Caleb Cotton married Nancy Meredith and to them were born 5 sons and 5 daughters: Elizabeth Melinda, Mahala, James, George, Noah Shelton, Penina, Josephine, Gabriel, Carl and Louisa.

I am a descendant of Peninah daughter of Caleb and Nancy Meredith Cotten. I have been researching this family for quite awhile. I have read this history shared to me by a descendant of Noah Shelton Cotten. They actually shared this and another that they had. The one mentioned James also as a missionary to the Cherokee. sent by England. The other history said James was Scotch Iriish and a teacher who was in the Cherokee Nation and married the daughter of a Cherokee Chief. There is a record of Peninah that says her grandparents were James Cotten and Shropsey. I am wondering about the children of Caleb and Nancy. I have Elizabeth, Mahala , Melinda, James, Carroll, George?, Noah Shelton, Josephine, Gabriel Loveon, Margaret Louisa, Peninah
