I am searching for any information about my ancestor Rachel Viola Whitecloud. She is believed to have been born in Virginia in 1780. She married John Persinger about 1800 in Virginia. She had a daughter Judith (Judy) Persinger in 1810. After the death of John, she married William Allen. She died in Iowa about 1865.

Not sure we are Cherokee. Here’s what I know: William Allen*(1783-1865) married Rachel in 1823 or 1832 (I’m sometimes dyslexic) William & Rachel had 3 kids: Whitley (my paternal) ancestor, James M. and Louvisa (Allen) Luther. James is buried in Kansas; Louvisa buried in Nebraska
I believe Rachel’s father was Chief Joseph E White Cloud, known as Mahaska (there’s more than one) and he was Chief of the Ioway tribe which was Sioux, I believe. The Ioways were eventually enrolled in “Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma or Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska.’ My guess, since James is buried in Kansas and Louvisa in Nebraska we are part of the KS/NE bunch.
William’s parents were (Major) John Allen (1749-1815) and Jane (Tandy) Allen. I believe John was from England (or maybe Ireland). I have Allen’s traced down to me. I hope this helps.

I am also searching for more definitive information about Rachel Viola Whitecloud. I was actually looking for some information about her father when I stumbled across this post so I wanted to clarify some misinformation for anyone who comes across this post in a search in like I did.
I’m going to be doing this from the Allen side so bear with me!
I don’t like to speculate on William’s parentage at the time but am keeping John Allen and Jane Tandy in mind. It is believed he migrated from Kentucky, spent time in Missouri, and settled in Iowa. If this information is accurate, it doesn’t seem to line up with John Allen being his father. Their lifestyles were so different, as well that’s it’s hard to make that fit. Not that they couldn’t but I’ve just never been able to gather enough information to confidently make that assertion.
The Allen’s were considered pioneers of the ME church and did what people call ‘church planting’ which is why they may have moved around the way they did. Rachel & William’s son Jesse is my 3rd great-grandfather.
William 1st married Polly burns in Pulaski, Kentucky, on January 18, 1802. She died giving birth to Whitley Allen on March 3, 1803. On December 19, 1824, Whitley (1803-1877) married his first wife and Rachel’s daughter, Judy Persinger (1810-1857). They had a daughter named Rachel Allen (1834-1855) whose photograph gets mixed up with her grandmother’s in some genealogical records on websites such as ancestry because of their names & obvious Indian heritage.
William’s 2nd wife was Nancy McCoun (1787-1823). They married on March 5, 1805 in Lincoln County, Kentucky and had the following children – James McCoun (1807-1872); Louvisa (1809-1884); John (1810-?); Polly N. (1813-?); William M (1816-); Nancy Jane (1818-?); Elijah (1820-1880).
William’s 3rd wife was Rachel Viola Whitecloud (1780-1865). They married on September 8, 1823 in Clay County, Missouri. Their children were Isaac A. (aka “Big Isaac”) (1824-1904 and my grandfather, Jesse Allen (1825-1890).
We were told through family history that my grandfather’s great-grandmother was full-blood Cherokee. Years later I was put in touch with a family member through a genealogical website who we didn’t know who verified the same information. That’s the only proof that we have so far but the search continues!
