Minnie was born in MO in 1877. Her maiden name was Snow. Her mother married a man named Powell and it may have been mis-remembered or pronounced as “Pall.” For example, this is how it was listed on a 1925 marriage record for James Enloe. His parents were given as Edward Enloe and Minnie “Pall.” Minnie’s death cert gives her parent’s names as George Snow and Linda Ferril [sic].

You can find Minnie living with her mother, Malinda Jane Ferrell, and step-dad (Joshua Powell) and half siblings in 1900. They were living in St. Francois County, MO at that time. She married Edward Enloe about a year later.

According to the 1900 Census details, Malinda had been married to Joshua Powell for 21 years. This would mean that they were married about 1878, or just one year after Minnie was born. She is the only Snow in the family unit. Her younger half-siblings, including those that are just a few years younger than her, are all Powells. Her father’s place of birth is listed as Tennessee. I couldn’t find Minnie’s father, George Snow in the 1880 Census, which would confirm the connection, but this individual might be found in the 1870 Census in Madison County, MO. A George Snow with a birth year of about 1850 (TN) was living as a single laborer. This seems to be a likely candidate. Further research would be needed to confirm this.

In any event, there is not much more information about George Snow other than he was born in Tennessee and he didn’t stay with Malinda Ferrell very long. Even if you exclude the 1870 Census George Snow candidate, we could speculate that he’d have an estimated birth year of about 1852 if you going off of a 25 year generational span, plus or minus a few years either way to adjust for deviation from the average. Minnie was born in MO in a White community and always listed as White. Her mother’s family lines go back to White roots also.

Minnie’s mother was definitely not Cherokee, she was of standard White American roots. And her father would have been born about a decade after Cherokee removal at a time when there were only a few dozen Cherokee family units still living in the extreme southeastern part of the state of Tennessee. This was an extremely tiny Cherokee remnant group, that represented a few scattered mixed blood families found in a few southeastern counties, and just a handful of full blood families that eventually moved to either Qualla community or Indian Territory in the subsequent decades, following Removal. They were a tiny minority population. There is also no indication that a Cherokee man from this small pool of ancestors would be found living and operating in eastern Missouri in the 1870s. There is no indication that he was of Cherokee ancestry, in other words. Or, it is highly doubtful unless you can find he connected to the remnant community still in the state at the time of his birth. There were no Cherokee families with this surname on the 1850 rolls (Chapman or Siler). However, this is just all theoretical until you can confirm George Snow’s identity and lineage.

What is clear is that in Minnie’s lifetime she had no connection with the Cherokee people, did not affiliated with them or live near a Cherokee community.

But, there are also some very interesting facts for the lineage that can be confirmed:

***Minnie’s grandfather, Christopher Ferrell, died in the Andersonville Prison Camp in GA, 1864. He was a Union infantry soldier. He is buried in the national cemetery there.

Minnie’s grandmother, Mary Jane Silvey, came from old colonial settler roots. These ancestors moved from VA into southern OH, and then west to MO.

Thanks for the reply it is more then I had before.. At least I can mark Cherokee off the list. I know that we had been told we had native American in our blood but the family seemed a shame and would not say which tribe we were from.
