Looking for birth certificate of my Great grandmother Annie Seay

October 10, 2016 by brendaw 1 Comment

My great grandmother was full blooded Cherokee from North Carolina. I think she was born in Cherokee NC. Her Married name is Harvey. I’m not sure about my great grandfathers first name. Their Children were born in Cherokee and my Grandfather name is Jonas Carl Harvey. The most family moved to Thomasville NC when the children were almost grown. I would like to find out if I have any relatives living in NC and I would like to get a copy of her birth certificate.

Jonah Carl Harvey’s grave can be found here:

    http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=HARV&GSpartial=1&GSbyrel=all&GSst=29&GScntry=4&GSsr=681&GRid=6917423&

    His parents were:

    Thomas Harvey (1879–1926)
    Annie Wilmuth Seay (1884–1966)

Annie was the daughter of Johnson Henry Seay “John” (1852–1910) and Penelope “Nellie” Biddy (1863–1930). This couple was married in Spartanburg, SC in 1881. They were not full blood Cherokees. They were listed as White in records and lived in White society. If there was more distant Native/Cherokee ancestry on a certain branch, this would require more research. But, what is apparent is that the individuals listed here had no tribal affiliation through their own lifetimes.

Here are a few links and summary of records to help you build your tree:
    Carolina Spartan (marriage announcement):
Seay, Biddy 24th November, 1881, Mr. John H. SEAY and Miss Penelope BIDDY, both of Spartanburg

    NC Death Certificate:
    Annie Wilmuth Harvey – 1966
    Gender: Female
    Race: White
    Age: 82
    Birth Date: 10 Feb 1884
Birth Place: Swain, North Carolina, United States
Residence: High Point, Forsyth, North Carolina
    Death Date: 13 Jun
Death Place: High Point, Forsyth, North Carolina, USA
    Spouse: Thomas Harvey
    Father: John Henry Seay
    Mother: Nellie Biddie
    Household Members:

    Annie Wilmuth Harvey
    Nellie Biddie
    John Henry Seay
    Thomas Harvey

John Seay was the son of Thomas Bradley Seay (b. 1830) and Lucinda Hall (b. 1832). This couple was married in Haywood County, NC in 1851. Penelope, or “Nellie,” was the daughter of Henry J. Biddy (b. 1838) and UNK mother.

FYI – There are no families or individuals with the surname Biddy or Seay on the Hester Roll in the 1880s or on Baker Roll in the 1920s. They are also not found on the BIA records of the Cherokee agency through the early 1900s.
