Born & raised in East Tn. with the stories of a full blooded Cherokee great grandmother; Rachel Newberry; whom married a scots-irishman named John Long. They’ve lived in North Carolina, Tellico Plains, Tn.,Fannin Co. Ga.& Maryville, Tn. (where she died in 1949 @ age 86). I just want to be a member of The Eastern Band of Cherokee, as i should of been at birth. I feel as if i was robbed not being a member already. I shouldn’t have to fight/pay/prove to be a member of my own race!!

Rachel was the daughter of Jesse Early Newberry (1820 ā 1908) and Mary Jane Willis (1822 -1880). Jesse was born in Hall County, GA and was the son of Joshua Newberry (1780 ā 1870) and Mary Ann Long (1790 ā 1870). None of these individuals had affiliation with eastern Cherokee. So, Iām not sure what you are referring to about being robbed or birth right stuff. You simply do your basic family tree and if they are eastern band, the affiliation would be apparent using Baker Roll of 1924, or Churchill, or Bia Rolls of the early 1900s. Or, you can go back to Hester Roll of 1884. Or, one might even go back to Siler and Chapman Rolls in the 1850s or even the Henderson Roll in 1835 to establish descendant status. None of these folks tie back to the Cherokee community, in the record trail.
