I am a relation. What would you like to know????
Anything and everything. 🙂
My grandma said that her great great grandmother (or something like that was Cherokee). I started doing genealogy on Ancestry for fun and found this person, as well as Elizabeth Snowbird Farmer (whom I am guessing is the person my grandmother spoke of). My biggest question is who are his parents, his wife’s (Sara’s) parents, and whether anyone has found for absolute certain that they are Cherokee (vs. “legendary stories” told over generations).
John Patterson (Hoppin) Clark was my Great Great Great Grandfather. He married Snowbird in 1818 and they had 10 children, one of whom was my Great Great Grandfather Alexander Clark who was 1/2 Cherokee. One of his son’s was my Great Grandfather John Henry Clark, who fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. One of his sons was my Grandfather, James Andrew Clark (who would be 1/16 Cherokee. One of his sons is my father, William Howard Clark.
John Clark was born Abt. 1758 in Augusta County, Virginia. He married Susannah “Sara” Ballard. She was born Abt. 1778 in Monroe County, Virginia.. These are John Patterson Clark’s parents. In talking with a distance cousin of mine who I found on line, Her name is Kelly and I learned this from her:
The Clark family originated from England… Kent County to be exact… and was already in America by the late 1600s, arriving in Jamestown VA. I am also descended from John Clark and Susanna Ballard (x5 gr-grandparents). Did you see the story on “Window to the Past” website about the Boyd-Clark families? Susanna Ballard Clark was the mother of Ruth Eles Clark (my ancestral grandmother); Ruth was the sister of John Patterson Clark. Susanna married John’s younger brother, Robert Clark, after his death, which now made Susanna a sister-in-law to John Patterson and Ruth Eles Clark, as well as their mother! Robert Clark was much younger than Susanna. I have Susanna listed as dying in West Virginia, but I am not sure this is correct. If you are on Ancestry.com, I can invite you to see my Family Tree, which goes quite a ways back. The Ballard family also came from England and was in America before 1689. Hope this helps!
Sincerely,
Kelly (your very distant cousin!)
You can reach out to me, Andrew Clark, at Andrew.clark@nwtc.edu. Let’s see if we can keep this research going.
John Patterson (Hoppin) Clark is my Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather. He and Elizabeth (Snowbird) had a son, John, Jr. John, Jr., had a son named Renault. Renault supposedly married a woman named Caroline pursuant to Cherokee law. They had a daughter named Stella, who had a son named Charles. Charles is my Grandfather.
Other than through family lore (which has been passed down through my family, too), has anyone confirmed that Elizabeth (Snowbird) Farmer and/or Elias (Spotted Horse) Farmer were in fact Cherokee? Are they listed in the Cherokee Rolls or any other documentation?
Any guidance would be helpful.
Thanks,
DKR
Spotted horse is my 5x great grandpa and I have just found this info in the last few days. I’m related to the Boyd’s and Clarks. Would love to hear more from any of you! Petskas@gmail.com
I am related to Spotted Horse through his daughter Sarah B 1-8-1834 in Jefferson KY. She married William James Royal in 1859 & they had my great grandmother Martha Royal, who married James Edward Fraize. James & Martha lived in Kentucky for a long time, having 8 children, one of whom was my grandmother Annie Francis Fraize. Grandma Annie was small boned, black hair, brown eyes. She & her sister Lucy, & their brother Clay all had the same build & looked Indian. She told us that she was 1/4 Cherokee.
James & Martha Fraize & my grandmother & several of her siblings are buried in St Charles, Arkansas beside the White River. If you’d like more information, contact me at dwestdewitt@gmail.com.
