Cherokee Lineage

May 6, 2015 by helenbelk 1 Comment

I have been told my whole life that my great grandmother on my father’s side was Cherokee. Her name was Mary Nipper and she was from the Florence/Muscle Shoals area of Alabama. Her daughter, my grandmother was named Della. She married a Butler. My father’s name was A.D.(initials only) Butler. My name is Helen Butler Belk. I would appreciate any help in finding out about my heritage, as I have always been proud of my Native American heritage. Thank you.

    Hi,
The only Nipper I find on the rolls is on the Dawes Roll. He is Robert W. 11307 and it gives Guion Miller number for him too. 20103

There are tons of Butlers on the Dawes Roll but no Della or AD. If they were not living in Indian Territory at the time of the rolls they will not be on them though and you can not be added unless you find another relative you can prove your line to on the rolls.

The 2 books to buy are called Cherokee Roots Vol 1 and 2. They are all the rolls. You can get them at Amazon, they are invaluable! Saves hours and hours of flipping through web pages.

    Good luck
