buffington/cumbie lineage

November 25, 2014 by gary a cumbie 9 Comments

Searching for any info on Sarah Anna Way Buffington b.1811 in s.c. She married John Jordan Cumbie (my g g grandfather) in Georgia about 1832. Her cousin Priscilla Malinda Buffington married John Jordans brother. Both women were of the Cherokee Nation but I can’t find any documentation or records on them. The families moved from Georgia to Pike Co, Alabama circa 1840s. John J and Sarah Anna moved to Texas circa 1870 til their deaths. Any help tracing Buffington ancestry and bloodline would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Gary.
I too descend from John Jordan Cumbie and Ann Buffington. From there my line comes down to Joseph Henderson Cumbie to John Wood Cumbie to my grandma Norma Ruth Cumbie to my dad then to me. My dad also grew up in E. Texas. I am interested to see where we connect further down the line. 🙂

Dad has told me he thought there was Cherokee and Choctaw on his mother’s side. I am just now starting to dig around and research my Cumbie lines. I was born a Hood and most of my research in the past, and recently, has been into those branches as I worked on getting my approval into DAR. That has now happened. However, I’m guessing there is a Rev. War patriot ancestor in our Cumbie as well whom I wish to trace out. Learning how to do the Cherokee tracing will be all new to me.I would be more than willing to share what I eventually find and and would love the same.

Looking forward to connecting with you.

    Ingrid

PS. We have our oldest son in the Navy at Bremmerton. 🙂

I’m late to the party!!! I had no clue this site existed. Gary (my brother’s name is also Gary), I am descended from John Jordan Cumbie via William Artimus (then Mertus Bemoan Cumbie, then Guy Glenn Cumbie). I’ve been stuck at Anna Buffington forever! May I contact you?

Hi Shelly. Haven’t talked with you in a few years. I hope all is OK with you. Did you ever find more info on Anna Buffington? I finally found a site that shows “Lydia” was Lydia Nancy Ann Quitman who married John Buffington III. They were Anna’s parents. You may have already known this, but I remember you commenting” Who is Lydia”. She died Sept 2, 1847. Buried in Milner, Lamar Co.,Georgia. Found this on Find a grave. Keep in touch.
