Query: In my genealogical searches I have run across several instances where Sarah “Sally” Payne, born 26 January 1803, Madison County, NC, died 1 November 1890, married George B. Query: I’m helping my uncle locate his Cherokee ancestry before he dies. I have located in the 1920 Missouri census that my uncles family states Indian for race. It also states missouri mixed blood cherokee. This is the same for all his relatives that I located on the census. I could not locate any of the family in the 1900 Federal census. So I believe they may be on the NA census in Missouri. I have located them also in the 1910 census this census states they are white as well as the 1930 census stating they are white.
My uncle has pictures of his ggrandfather in full Indian dress. His name is Oceander “Buck” Pepper. I have found articals online that also state that the family war raised in the Cherokee way. But I have had no luck finding this family in the Dawes Rolls.
Can someone help me out as where to go from here. Oh I forgot the 1920 census has all family members with “32-4” above mixed blood. I believe this may be an indication of which tribe they belonged to. Does anyone know?

Query: I have been researching a John Jefferson JONES, Cherokee County, GA., along with HOBGOODS. I received some information from another rearcher. This is from an obit she said found in Calhoun,GA library. This is what it said: A message came down from Ft.Smith, Ar. in November, to hang Jefferson Jones, wife’s name Fanny, from Cherokee County, Ga., because he is Indian. So they hanged him on Nov. 14, 1889. He was hung with several other men. I have not seen the actual obit, but where would I find out about this to verify it? The names and place match ours, but in 1889, he would have been 78 years old.

Query: I have found an ancestor, Mary ANDREW (no “s” on the end) who appears on the Dawes Roll, according to what I’ve found at ancestry.com. However, her age blood and roll number are blank?!? My suspicion is that there is a note on the census card. Perhaps she married again before the roll was closed and is listed under a different surname. How can I get to look at the original census card #6311? Have these been microfilmed?

Query: Recently I have uploaded my family tree on several sites. My husband’s maternal Grandfather was Martin Lincoln Toliver. On each posting the father of MLT is added by the site administrators. He is listed as Indian Chickamauga. I have no wife listed. Our oral history indicates MLT had a falling out with his father and left home. To ensure that he could not be found he dropped one “l” from Tolliver. All of this is a puzzle to me. I desperately need help on this.

Query: Family lore has it that ISABELL PARALEE JACKSON was Cherokee. She would have been born abt. 1848 and married GOODIN JACKSON on May 6, 1866 in Stone Co., Missouri. Records indicate her maiden name was also Jackson, though no relation to Goodin other than wife, and her name has been spelled several different ways, including Pairlee, Parlee, Poralee, and on at least one occasion, Doralee. Goodin’s family was originally from Giles Co., Tennessee and there is a chance Paralee’s family was, too, though I have yet to find any information regarding her parents or her heritage. Any suggestions on how I may find out if Paralee was, in fact, Cherokee and/or how I might locate her ancesteral lineage if in fact she was Cherokee would be greatly appreciated.

Query: Looking for information on a John (Jack) SANDERS. He was elusive about his past to his daughter, but as the story goes, he was born in Tennesse on 6 Jan 1880 or 1881. His mother died before he was about 9 years old and he didn’t get along with his step-mother so he left home. Later, in Tennesse or New York, he killed a man during a bare-knuckle boxing match so he fled to Montana (thus, supposedly, is why he was always elusive of his past). His nickname in Philipsburg, Montana was “Blackie.” He was probably at least 1/2 Cherokee. His Social Security Card application lists parents of Jerry Sanders and Amelia Trudeau living in South Dakota, but I’m not sure of the reliability of that. I would appreciate any information of advice anyone can pass on.
