Query: I am not sure how many greats she is..but my grandmother was a Cherokee Indian Princess. Her name was Americus. I know she married a James Bowlin or Bowlen Rose. My mother said it could even be Bowen or Bowin. I know that Americus died in 1927. She and James met on the Trail of Tears. He was an officer in the Confederate Army. We would like to know how to go about finding out who she was and who her father was. I have googled my butt off and have found nothing. Surely a confederate officer marrying a full blood cherokee indian maiden wouldn’t be forgotten? We don’t know if it was in Tennessee or Georgia. But that is where my mother has it narrowed down to..I think. If someone could please get back to me, I would so so so SO GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!

Query: I am looking for the parents of Marry Ann Ward; born 1849 in Arkansas. She married John R Potter in 1871 and moved to Red River County, Texas. She died in 1923. Sarah Ann Ward was Mary’s sister and was born in 1842 in Arkansas. She died in 1922. I was told their parents were John McKenza Ward and a Sabry Renoles. I did find an 1850 census in Arkansas listing a Sabrina R Ward and a John M Ward. The family bible lists that John M Ward was born in Indian Territory. We think he was born in Tennessee or Kentucky. We do not have any dates of death. The census puts John M Ward born around 1813 and Sabrina would be about 1815.

Her last name on some genealogy info was previously also known as BROWDER and MCCANDLESS. Her mother Lucy, may have had a second marriage with William MCCANDLESS. Her dictated and transcribed statement follows. “My maiden name was TURMAN. I had one brother named Thomas TURMAN, we being the only children of Larkin and Lucy TURMAN, my mother Lucy TURMAN’s maiden name being ALLISON, she being a daughter of William and Charity ALLISON, Charity ALLISON’s maiden name being BROWN, Charity BROWN, being an illigitimate child of _____ BROWN. I think the name of this woman was Nancy or Jane, a full blood Cherokee Indian and the refuted father also was a full blood Cherokee Indian. The above named Nancy or Jane BROWN had one brother named Robert BROWN, they being the children of John BROWN… resided at Brown’s Ferry on the Tennessee River near Chatanooga. I was born in Tennessee near the Brown’s Ferry and lived there till I was about twelve years of age. I remember the family names as given above and that they were known to be Cherokee Indians. I am sixty-three years of age.” She states that this John BROWN should have been on the 1836 Cherokee rolls. I have seen in posts that this John BROWN also may have been known as James BROWN and possibly related to Alexander BROWN? Do not know if this is related to Chief John BROWN of Creekpath.
