I am researching Powell surname in Fleming KY 1812. One of my 4th great grandmothers Harriett Powell born 1812 Fleming KY married to Samuel Rawlings (Rolings) born about 1807 Fleming KY. Both had migrated to Shelby Indiana by 1840. I have read that KY Powells possibly have Cherokee heritage.

My gggrandfather was an Indian Chief who was hanged for stealing a horse, so the story goes. He lived in either Tennessee or Kentucky. He married a Cherokee woman by the name of Blue Feather. He lived outside but she lived inside a home owned by the last name Reed. She took that name on.
My husband, Billy Ray Chitwood, of Campbell Co., TN, was always told he had Cherokee ancestors.
