I know my Cherokee lineage as far back as my Great-Great-Grandfather, Thomas Wickliffe from Spavinaw, OK. His wife was Hattie Tiger, sometimes spelled “Hettie” on census reports. He was born on May 14, 1883. Hattie in 1893, but I’m not certain of month and date. Any info would be appreciated.

Thomas Wickliffe was a full blood Cherokee. His father was John Wickliffe and his mother was Lydia Foreman. She died before enumeration in 1902.
The interesting thing about this family’s application is that it represent “in abstentia” enrollment.
John was opposed to enrollment and tried to avoid the Dawes Commission. But, they created a file for him anyway and certified his lineage and enrolled him using previous rolls, and testimony of others.
John was born about 1844 and his parents were Charles and Tarnie Wickliffe, who also died prior to the 1902 enumeration.
Hattie was also a full blood Cherokee. John and Hattie were bilingual, able to speak English but spoke Cherokee at home. She was also enrolled by an informant.
Her parents were Nellie and Henry Tiger. She was about 10 years old in 1902, and her father was already dead at that time. Nellie’s father was named Carseluke and her mother was known as Nancy Chicken. Nellie was born about 1861.
