September 15, 2015 by swoody 1 Comment

Any information on Cherokee ancestry of Percy Arnold Smithart: Percy Arnold Smithhart was born on 6 May 1891 at Scott Co., MS. He married Eva Mae Denson, daughter of Jesse Rufus Denson and Carrie Lee Alman, circa 1910. He died on 23 Feb 1949 at Palestine, Anderson Co., TX, at age 57.

Percy is my maternal grandfather known to me as half Cherokee. I believe Cherokee lineage was on his father’s side and remember his father as appearing Native American but don’t really know for sure. I was a young child then.

Perycy’s father/mother: Robert Columbus Smithhart was born in Oct 1867 at Scott Co., MS. He married Frances R. Sanders circa 1888.

Robert Columbus father James/mother Effa: James S.1 Smithhart1,2 was born circa 1822 at South Carolina.2 He married Mary (–?–).3 He married Effa (–?–) circa 1864.2

He lived on 11 Sep 1860 at P.O. Brandon, Rankin Co., MS.3 He lived on 23 Jun 1870 at Beat 4, Scott Co., MS.1 He lived on 25 Jun 1880 at Beat 4, Scott Co., MS.2

I probably can’t help you. I’m searching myself. I have a gr gr grandmother, Mariah Smithhart who md. Jas. R Gibson in Warren Co. MS in 1855. Different branches of the family agree she was of Indian ancestry. And as the Warren Co. SMITHHARTS were from SC and TN, a Cherokee connection is likely.
I think we all have the problem: reaching from MS back into SC and TN.
So I guess all we can say is, ‘Hello Cousin’!
