Cherokee Freedman, any familiar names?

December 5, 2023 by jankyjolteon Leave a Comment

I’ve recently solved a 100 year family mystery, and the end result is my mystery Great Great Grandma was entered on the Dawes Rolls as a child. I got a lot of names from her mother’s application and interviews. But that’s all I’ve been able to come up with. I’d love to chat with people who may have overlapping names.

Sophia Jones made a reference to her ancestors being “old settlers”, and was owned by Easter and Aaron Landrum before freedom.

My great Grandmother: Ocie Mae Swearngen (1920 – appeared to be adopted to a white family, dont think she was a member of the Cherokee Nation)

Ola Jones (1889). Siblings include Lulu, Nora, Samuel, Timothy, Helen, and Willie (died at age 3) Jones.

Sophia Landrum (1849) Born in the saline district, kidnapped by Choktaw for 12 years before rescue, then moved to Cooweescoowee.

Armstead Jones (1846 – freed slave who resided among Cherokee, but not entered into Dawes, like his wife and children were)

George Landrum (1813 – was a POW in Leavenworth)

Peggy Walker (1822)
