Query: My greatgrandfather's birth name was Percy Donaldson or some derivative of Donaldson, i.e., Donelson. His birthdate is listed as March 1850, Tennessee. He fought in the Union Army (A Tennessee regiment) for two years, but was transferred to a sugar mill, labor/convict camp in Matagorda County, Texas sometime after the Civil War ended as a result of some impropriety/altercation during or after the War. At this time, he changed his name to Polk Williams at the sharp maneuvering of his lawyer in order to lighten his sentence. While running the sugarmill (due to his advanced/superior skills, he met and married Amy Hawkins, an ex-slave of Colonel James Boyd Hawkins Plantation in Hawkinsville, Texas/Matagorda County. Grandpa Polk was literate as indicated by his military records. His parents are listed as being Kentucky natives on his military records, as well. He was part Cherokee and known for running away from the reservation to work on ships. He was very astute in all shipping operations. Grandpa Joel Williams, Sr. said Grandpa Polk visited a sister in Paris, Texas, and that he owned land in West Texas due to his armed services. I am looking for anyone with any knowledge of Polk Willams, formerly Percy Donaldson.
