Query: I'm seeking any help tracing my Cherokee roots. My grandmother, Beatrice Tapley was one of 7 children (Margie, Beatrice, Joy, Erskin, Gladys, Hal, and Edna) resulting from the marriage of William Burton and Tennessee Pemberton Whitecotton. Tennessee Pemberton Whitecotton was one of 3 daughters (Tennessee, Nora, and Margie) resulting from the marriage of a man with a last name of Pemberton and a Cherokee woman who I only know as Maw Pemberton Whitecotton. They owned a store at a crossroads in what was then Hollywood Alabama (I think it may be near what is now Scottsboro). If anyone has any knowledge of this family, I would dearly love information. Thanks in advance.

Query: We are trying to prove heritage. My great grandfather, my mothers fathers father, was a full bloded cherokee of the reserve. I am 1/8, my mother 1/4, my grndfather 1/2 and my great grandfather full blooded. My great-grandfathers name was Jasper William McFall, called Jasper. He was counted. My grand-father was an air force officer, but before they converted records to computers (mind you, this as a long time ago) this section with his records was burnt down in a fire, and we cannot find any others to say he was counted, but we have reason to belive that he was. If you could help me, or have any information, please contact me.

Query: I am looking for any information about the mother of Jack Alton Putman. Jack was born 5 August 1886 in Woodbine, Cooke County, Texas. We think his mother was Sarah, but we don't know her maiden name. Legend says that Sarah was Cherokee. According to Jack's military records, his mother was born in Texas, however this could be wrong because his stepmother was also born in Texas. Legend says that Sarah died in Rush Springs Oklahoma in about 1891 when Jack was about 5 years old. Jack's father is Frank Ernest (FE) Putman (or Putnam). There are no records of Sarah's death at Rush Springs due to a fire at the courthouse. We appreciate any ideas!

Query: I have been told that my gggrandmother Tempe PAINE was sold to the PAIN/PAYNE family in about 1820 in Buncombe Co., NC which today is Madison Co., NC. Would there be anyway to find who her family was? The story was a man came by the farm and had a few little Cherokee girls for sale. Mr. Pain/Payne bought Tempe because she was the biggest and strongest. This was told to my uncle by his grandmother, Tempe’s daughter, as was told to her by Tempe herself. Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Query: My husband is part Cherokee from his father's side. Unfortunately his father would not or could not provide him with any information and he is now deceased. We have sketchy information back to the early 1800s - the names we have are WM Pruettt or Pruitt WS Pruett or Pruitt (supposedly husband and wife) born circa 1820. We are not sure if the WM stands for William but I don't believe it does from the way it is written. Their son is Jesse James Pruitt or Pruett born circa 1854, wife Mary Polly Green(e), their daughter Selia (Celia) Texanna Pruitt or Pruett aka Sarah born May 8, 1876 or 1879, husband Joseph Issac Grigg - possibly Joseph I. W. Grigg(s) born Dec 8 1869 or 1870, their daughter Mary S Grigg(s) born May 8, 1900, husband William Robert VanDyke born Aug 2, 1896, their son Billie Joseph VanDyke born May 31, 1921- my father in law.

Query: I am looking for information about my paternal grandfather, Edward Arnold, born abt 1887/1888 in Missouri and married my grandmother Lilly M. Richardson, born abut 1893, in Missouri. They had 3 sons, Don E., Charles E., and Raymond. They were divorced by 1920. The boys were born 1912, 1914, and 1916, respectfully. Grandmother remarried John Jordan and at some point moved to KCMO. Grandfather stayed in the Carthage, MO area as far as we know. Grandfather also went by John E. Arnold as well as Edward J. Arnold. Grandfathers Father was born in Tennessee and his Mother was born in Missouri. Both are said to be of Cherokee blood. Grandmother had a roll number. She supposedly sold her birthright when she came to KCMO. If anyone has any info on either one please e-mail me.
