Query: Am looking for Leatherwood, Nicholas Cicero Leatherwood married to Caroline ? are in the census in Haywood, NC. Their son Robert married Nora Lee ? and Nora is on the Cherokee Rolls and lists as a "no show" for the hearing (Nora's father was named "Parched Corn" and for some reason I keep picking up the last name "Flowers"). Leahterwoods also listed on the Cherokee rolls but were "denied". Any photos or information would be greatly appreciated. Both Cicero and Robert are buried in the National Cemetery here in Chattanooga. According to the person at the National Cemetery "No records were required, filed, or kept". What a shame! Please help if you have any information. I do remember hearing stories about Robert and Nora traveling back and forth from Tennessee to Arkansas by covered wagon. She evidently was from Arkansas. Also have Indian heritage on father's side - Radcliff. The original family of Radcliff settled in Ellijay, Georgia.

Query: I'm trying to locate information on my great-great grandparents Luther and Martha Thurman. Their son was named Luther Willie Thurman & they also had 4 daughters that I know of. One was named, Bertha (whom everyone called Aunt Pat), Bulla (not sure on the spelling), Edna & Lilly Thurman. My grandfather married my grandmother Dorothy Lee Polston from Kentucky. I do know one story which my mother shared with me... She told me my great-great and maybe one more great grandfather, traded his horse for my great-great and maybe one more great grandmother. I am trying to find more information on my Cherokee Indian family history. It's my blood line and I have enough information about them. I just want to know more about where I come from. Every site I visit wants money for this. When I tell people I am part Indian, they have a hard time believing it because of my hair and eye color. Which really don't bother me now that I am older. However, I would like to see pictures of my great-great and even more great grandparents, aunts, uncles & cousins. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Again, my grand father was Luther Wile Thermion, grandmother was Dorothy Lee (Polston) Thermion. My great grandparents were Luther & Martha Thermion. I have a few more relatives living in Nebraska which I believe were all born in Kentucky. My uncle, Winston AB Thermion married to Linda. My aunt, Annalee Joyce (Thermion) Jones married to the late Lavern Jones. Uncle William Howard Thermion. My mother Violet D. (Thermion) Fowler, the late David Charles Thermion & the late Jimmy Roy Thermion. All children of Luther & Dorothy Thermion. Thank you for your time.

Query: Does any of this sound familiar to anyone: As a follow up to my post last month, My ggfather (Louis Edwin Wood 1889 TX-1956 OK) was supposed to be 1/4 Cherokee. His son Vic Wood wrote a memoir which had the following paragraph: "In 1942, we made a trip...to Rusk, Texas to see where Dad was born. we visited some of our relatives on the way. One was especially interesting. It was a cousin of Dad's who lived between Kilgore and Henderson, Texas - A full-blooded Cherokee whose grandfather had 'proven-up' for his land allotments. Dad's grandfather had not done this...therefore we did not get our land allotments. This cousin....She had a six foot cyclone fence around the one hundred acre farm....She had over one hundred oil wells on her three farms." None of this makes any sense. I can't find any "land allotments" to Cherokees in Texas? I'm not sure if this is just fiction, or they made a mistake as to blood quantum/tribe, ect. I've looked through every cousin-1st cousin - 2nd cousin, ect and can't find anyone on the rolls. The one semi-link I can find is a Eudora (Dora) McHaney (m.Moore), born in TX 1850 who died in IT OK in 1885. As a researcher I think - "All you had to do was put her name in there!" Very frustrating. To be honest, I'm not interested in enrolling with a tribe, or in "land allotments," ect. The heritage is what is important to me. So if this sounds familiar at all I would love to have ANY information. I would also be happy to share any information I have on this family.

Deanna Mcclure
Query: Hello, my name is Deanna Mcclure in Tulsa, OK. I have been doing research on my mother's father's side of the family. My uncle, before passing on, did this whole research and I have a hugh note book typed up of our past family, I am trying to find the Indian in our past so that some of the family can register. So this is what I want to know if you have ever heard of. According to the story which was told to Albin Azbill, of Richmond, Kentucky by his grandmother, Mabala Jane Becknell Azbill, an indian chief of the Cherokee nation, perhaps Chief Dragging Canoe, (d1792), son of Attakullakulla, had visited the Becknells and had often hunted with Samuel and his young son, Thomas in the near regions, many times Chief brought his wife and slept in a wigwam on the Becknell land. On one occasion the Becknells arose early to greet their indian friends however, this time the wigwam was empty, and no sign of anyone was seen. The Becknells reasoned that misfortune had struck, and began to search for clues, under some bushes and leaves they hear the cry of a baby searching further they found a small child tied to its dead mothers breast, the Becknells took the child home and raised her as their own. The mother had died during child birth and following the Cherokee custom the father left the child to perish with its dead mother. Malinda was the motherless indian baby. When Malinda approached womanhood William Asbille made plans to marry her he discovered that she did not have no legal surname. While she had been raise by the Becknells she was never adpoted. They made her last name Ross the maiden name of his mother Dorthy Ross Asbille or parhaps she was a descendant of Daniel Ross, Cherokee father of the famous Chief John Ross. She became known to the later generation as Malinda Ross.

Query: I am researching my father's great great grandparents. My dad's mother's name was Helen Elizabeth Harshberger Wilt. Helen's dad's name was Frank Harshberger and Frank's dad's name was Albert Harshberger married to Wilhelmina Harshberger. Albert's dad was 75% Native American and Albert's mother (don't know the name) was supposedly the daughter of a chief. My dad passed away in February 2008 and he didn't even know he had this heritage. I always wondered where he got that beautiful black hair and dark complexion. I think my finding out about this heritage is a gift to me from him because I would always call and bother him and ask how he was doing. He would ask me if I had anything else to do. So now, since he has passed, I think he did this on purpose to keep me busy. I miss him. This is like getting just a piece of my dad back. A part of him of which I am very proud of. I just want to know for sure if my ancestors were Native American, who they were and of which tribe. Most of the Harshbergers settled in PA and OH, so I am guessing the Native Americans we would be related to are of the Iroquois Nation, maybe Seneca/Mingo? If anyone knows anything, please help me. I would appreciate it. Thank you so much.

Query: Hello All! Like everyone here, family tradition says we are Cherokee. My great uncle wrote a memoir saying his dad was 1/4 Cherokee. Based on my research I cannot substantiate this, but I was always very proud to think I was Cherokee so I will continue to look! My GGrandfather (supposed to be 1/4 Cherokee) was Lewis Edwin Wood (1889-1956). Based on that, one or more of the following people (his grandparents) is 1/2-Full blooded Cherokee: James Edwin Wood (b Tenn 1828-1908 Rusk TX) m to Catherine Berger (1839-1921), Charles L Christian (1818-1921 Rusk Tx) m to Minerva McDonald (b Tenn 1831- 1896 Rusk Tx). Family tradition also says our direct ancestors were NOT on the Final rolls, but a brother of the Cherokee ancestor was listed. If any names sound familiar I would love any info out there. I would also be happy to share any info I have on this side of my family.

Query: I've posted before, but haven't got any answers, I'm hoping somebody will know this time. I have been told by my grandmother that we are Native American, and doing my genealogy online I've been told many times we are, but I can't figure out where. One person told me that my family is on the rolls, and I found my great great grandmother one one getting money from the US govt for having to move. Here is my genealogy:

My great grandmothers name is George Washington Dotson

son of James Stephen and Luvina Addeline NIX

James is the son of George Jefferson Dotson and Sarah SMITH

George is the son of William Abraham Dotson and Nancy Elizbaeth RAYNOR

I found online that William was Choctaw and Nancy was Cherokee, is this true, does anyone know? Please email me if you do.

Query: My father's mother's maiden name was angelina chiefo and that she had 3 sister Muade, Martha and Gloria and one brother I never knew. and grew up in the South either Tennesee or Kentucky.

My father's maternal great grandmother was a full blood Cherokee, probably from Tennessee. She may have been born before or after the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation from their homelands in, Tennessee, what we believe, to the reservations of Arkansas and Oklahoma during the period of 1838-39, but that has not been confirmed. The dates of her birth and death are unknown but it is logical that she was born before 1860. My grandmother was born 1898 and other then the fact that my Dad spoke about living with his grandmother in the south when he was very small that is about all I know. I wish I knew a lot more about her, but my grandmother would never speak of our Cherokee heritage nor would she share any information, all of the people in our family including my father and three brothers and my grandmothers three sisters and brother who knew her personally are now deceased, taking with them facts that are now lost, probably forever. Such is my dilemma.

Four generations later, my dad still exhibited many of the distinct characteristics of the Cherokee blood he carried in his veins. The high cheekbones, bent nose, reddish brown skin tone, course, dark hair and other physical traits, and was a professional drummer. He knew less about the precise details of his ancestry than we know today, thanks to the internet. We were always told of our Native American lineage, but most of the detail was either never told to us or unknown.

Query: November, 2005 - Curtis Eugene Ezell Query: I am researching a John R. Dickens or Dickins. He is My Great Grandfather. This is what I have: INDIAN NAME: KOSKY or KOSKG or ROSOKEY, Rahsokey.

THE DAILY MOBILE PRESS MARCH 25, 1885

DEATH OF AN INDIAN CHIEF. JOHN R. DICKINS, OF DICKINS' FERRY.

On Monday, John R. Dickins died at his residence at Dickins' Ferry on Dog River, about twenty-five miles from the city. John R. Dickins was,and has been, for a score more years familiar to the eyes of every man, woman and child in and about Mobile. He was made conspicuous by his eccentric peculiarities which display themselves in a strong desire to practice the habits and customs of the Indians even while living in a civilized and intelligent community. His life was an eventful one, and fraught with many incidents and adventures of greater magnitude than are met with in the lives of most men; but little is known, however,of the details of his life.

He was born in Georgia about 70 years ago. From Georgia he went to Texas, and it is believed that it was there he was first thrown with the Indian tribes with whom he afterwards became identified. He went to the home at which he died several years before the war. He was a frequent visitor to this city, and always attracted attention by his attire, which was the full dress of an Indian, consisting of buckskin coat with breeches and leggins of the same material, ornamented with beads and a buckskin cap,set off with feathers. It has been his habit to vist to Indian Territory where he would devote several months to visiting the different tribes and looking up his friends. One peculiarity of these vists was that he would leave home without the knowledge of his family, who never knew of his whereabouts until his return. At the time of his death he held the title of chief of the tribes.

(Dickens Ferry was also known as Dog River.)

News Paper clipping sent to me by Betty Clark Rodgers,Pasca. Mississ. MARCH 27, 1885Col. Jno. R. Dickins, of Dickens' Ferry, has passed away to the blissful hunting grounds. The old man paid his last debt of mortal infirmities last Monday, at the age of sixty-seven. He had many friends to whom his suit of buck-skins was familiar, who will be sorry to hear that the old Cherokee chief is no more.

I also found on Microfilm, records relating to enrollments of Eastern Cherokee 1908 to 1910 volumes 5-7 applications 16001-31000 Microscopy No. 685. This record is found at the Mobile Library, Genealogical

Query: My mom and I are looking for information on Lenora Knowles, my great grandmother, my mothers grandmother. Here is all we know; Lenora Knowles was my mother's grandmother. We think she died in 1970 and was elderly at the time of her death. Lenora married John Schuler and became Lenora Schuler. They had two children John Schuler Jr. and Julia Katherine Schuler (my uncle and my mother). We think that she was possibly American Indian, although we never knew more about it because in her time they didn't talk about such things. We also have bound books upon books of high quality photographs of all sorts of Lenora's family members. They are studio quality and very clearly show the family as having some sort of American Indian in them. It looks through pictures to be mixed marriages between white and indian.

They later lived in Tulsa Oklahoma, (because at some point that is where the family ended up.)For all we know Tulsa is where she was born. We are interested to know anything about her family but would love to know who her parents were or anything about her heritage. Anyone who may know who Lenora;s family was or her siblings, please contact me. Please remember that we are not sure where she was born, so it may not be limited to Oklahoma.
