Pamela Richards
Query: In response to:

Gary Stanfield Query: I am trying to locate any information on Jacob Cable, b 22 Sept, 1806 in Scioto County, OH, and died 5 Feb, 1893 south of Palisade, Hitchcock County, Nebraska. He married Elizabeth Holmes 22 Oct, 1829 in OH. Elizabeth was the daughter of John K. and margaret (James) Holmes. Jacob was supposed to be a full blooded Cherokee whose family made the Trail of Tears trip and then migrated to Missouri, Ohio and other states. Any info would be appreciated.

Sorry, I tried to reach you at your email address and got bounced. I don't think I can add very much to that, but I wonder if you know the names of Jacob's children. I am looking for a Melissa Cable who, according to the 1880 census, was born in 1837 in Scioto County. Her father is listed as Jacob Cable and her mother listed as Holmes. In 1880 Jacob Cable was 73 years old and listed as a farmer living in Walnut, Phillips, Ks. His parents were both born in Pennsylvania. The oral history in our family has Melissa Cable Lewis as the descendant of a family that came from Switzerland. She was apparently raised in a Mennonite family and was known when she married to serve "seven sweets and seven sours" on her table everyday. Heavy use of pickling, sounds like. I'm not sure how to reconcile the two stories. If her father was a full-blooded Cherokee, possibly Melissa made a great deal of her "Mennonite" (perhaps through her mother?) background so she could pass as white. At any rate, she remained married in Ohio while her father Jacob moved out west. I'm quite sure she did not remain with the Mennonite faith throughout her life; she was a regular Church of Christ churchgoer with her husband James Alexander, Alec or Alexander Lewis. There were many Jacob Cables among the family that emigrated from Swizerland, but I have not nailed a good match for Melissa's father yet. I would love to hear from you about your progress in researching Jacob Cable. Feel free to contact me!

Robinson
Query: John Nelson Robinson Married Elizabeth Moore. Crab Orchard, Kentucky mid 1840-1860's. John Nelson Robinson was drowned about 1860's on a river while trading on a barge. Rumor in the Robinson clan somewhere...was a marriage of a Cherokee line. I have heard if a Cherokee is in your line, your relatives down the tree will always retain their hair color/not graying...is it true? Seems to be on our side, only a sprinkling of gray in late age. I am hunting any Robinsons that seem to be in this line or Moore or Carter. I am hoping to track down the Cherokee line...some said were were somehow kin to Daniel Boone...We just can't seem to find parents of Elizabeth Moore, or any relatives from John Nelson Robinson...line. Any help...maybe something will align to your tree?

Query: I'm trying to solve a family mystery. We know we are descendents of the Houston family, presumably Sam Houston's 'brother'. There was some scandal involved because the spelling was changed to 'Huston'. The farthest back we have traced is to James Logan Huston, born 1845 in Texas, and died 1912 in Texas. He would have been have been either Cherokee or Comanche. I have learned of no interactions between any of Sam's brothers and any native tribe. My questions are, did Sam Houston or any of his brothers have any dealings with the Cherokee that would have produced offspring? Why is the 'Houston' name listed as a 'Cherokee' name in the lists of names? All members of my family who had any knowledge of this have long since died. My great grandmother , Jennie Pearson, born Ida Jane Huston in 1879, was 1/4 'indian' and lived in Texas and Colorado. Her daughter, Cleo, married Vernie Hill, a descendent of John C. Calhoun, an enemy of Sam Houston, in Joshua, Texas in 1920.

Robin Lockhart
Query: My name is Robin Lockhart. My mother, Patricia Sue Beckley Lockhart, is the daughter of Bernadine Buschman and was born on 17 September 1955 in Hobbs , New Mexico . My grandmother, Ms Buschman, became pregnant unwed and was married off by the family in shame. It has been a HUGE family secret as to who the father was. She has kept this secret from my mother and then she alienated the entire family including her children. Over the years, my mother has pleaded with her for information. Recently we discovered the father was full Cherokee and that was one of the main reasons for the secrecy. Prejudice of interracial relationship is nothing but cruel in our eyes. We were also told the father has tried all of my mother’s life to find her and make himself known to her according to Ms Buschman’s sister, but the family has continued to circle the wagons in secrecy. To this day, we still do not have a name for our Grandfather. However, we were told he was in Arizona over 3 years ago in a care facility suffering from sclerosis of the liver and that he had lived in Hobbs , New Mexico his entire life before that. My mother has wanted to know her father all her life. We now fear he may be deceased from his illness, since the lead is over 3 years old. We want him to know he is unconditionally loved and respected. We know his absence was not of his own doing. We hope to have a relationship with him and his family if at all possible.

Query: Family stories exist that a Sarah Angelina Townsend , born about 1861 or 1862, who married George Washington Long, born 1853, 'signed' Cherokee Indian treaties of some kind. It is said, she did a lot of work for the Cherokee Indians. I assume this would have taken place in Texas, since she was born in Texas and lived her life in Texas. I'm not convinced these family rumors are true. Could you help me find out if she had anything to do with the Cherokee Indians? Her father was Alex Bryant Townsend, b, about 1825 in Alabama. Her mother was Elvira Brymer, b, 1831 in Tennessee. I haven't been able to find a connection between the Cherokee and Sarah.
