In 1880 she was with the Rubin SEAGRAVES family in Ellis County, Tx. She was back in Clark county, Ar in 1885 when she married my grandfather, Theodore [Dory] VAN METER. He came from Ohio between 1880 and 1885. Some of the family say that she was part Indian and her parents were killed in a battle between the full and half breeds in 1870 and the children all put in foster homes. Neither the CLARK or SEAGRAVES descendents say she is related to them. Her grandson said she didn't want anyone to know she was Indian. C. Gaylord Query: I am trying to find out about our indian heritage. My g-grandfather was John L. Saunders and my g-grandmother was Ella Harroun (Herroon, Heron). Her parents were Andrew Harroun Louisa Balch and Andrew's parents were David Harroun and Cynthia Pike. We have forever been told we are of the Cherokee Indian, but have no way of proving this. Photos of my g-grandmother certainly shows the possibility of indian heritage; however, we do not know. Ella was born in 1870 and John was born in, we believe, 1857. Does anyone have any link to any of the names posted herein? If so, please let me know. Thanks so much!

Marie Porsch Query: My grandmother was Rachel Elizabeth Smith born in 1870 in Arkansas and died in Lubbock County, TX in 1930. She was listed in the 1870 Clark county, Ar. as an orphan living with the Thomas Clark family. In 1880 she is living with the Seagra[o]ves family in Ellis County,Tx. In 1885 she married James Henry Van Meter in Clark County. She was 15. He was in Ross County Ohio in 1880 so I don't think she knew him before she went back to Ar. a She must have had relatives there. I never asked Mother for her Lizzie's siblings name. Mother said her father's name was John Smith,a stage coach driver, who was killed by Indians, but she didn't have much to say about Grandma's family. According to an older cousin Grandma was whole or part Indian. Her parents were killed in a fight between the pure breeds and half breeds and the children were raised by other people. The name may not even have been Smith. Grandma wouldn't admit being Indian, but she had Indian features. Both Clark and Seagra[o]ves descendents say she isn't related to them. Does anyone know of a battle that may have occured in Arkansas in 1870? I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

This is what I have: My great aunt, Noma Hall Bell, told me before she died in 1997 that her and my grandfather's grandfather was a Cherokee chief, but didn't say which side. My grandfather was William B. Hall, Jr. They were both born in Austin, TX to Carrie (Thomas) Hall and Will Hall. They were supposed to have had 15 brothers and sisters, but I only have one's name, Itacsa (Hall?) Noma was born in 1904 and William, Jr. was born in 1922. Carrie Thomas' father was Ellis Thomas, but it lists her mother as "unknown" on her death certificate. I don't have any more info on William B. Hall, Sr.'s parents. One doctor said me and my father both definitely have East Texas Cherokee bone structure in our feet. I also have pictures of Carrie and she appears very "Indian".

Shawn Query: Below is a written history compiled from stories of ancestors. Any information would be greatly appreciated. This history begins with no surnames, as they could not be obtained at the beginning of the search. All we know is the family, (Wielseu, several of them) along with others, migrated from England, with the permission of the English government. They first migrated to Amsterdam, Holland, and stayed there for an indefinite time. But when they settled in Amsterdam, they were forced by the English government to take out citizenship papers within ten days, and if they did not they would be forced to return to England.
The majority of these immigrants secured employment with the Scotland ship yards, and many of them bought shares in the company. They all filed for their citizenship papers and that is when the Wielseus had their name changed to Wilson. The Wilsons followed the trade ships and were all shipwrights, engineers, cabinet makers and carpenters on ships.
They went from Amsterdam, Holland to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and from there to Norfolk, Virginia. From here, we have the first record of our own ancestry. Jake Wilson left Norfolk, Virginia, and moved to the northern part of Illinois, in and around Chicago, where the Indians inhabited the territory. Jake married an Indian woman of the Iroquois tribe, and had four sons by his marriage, Amos, Andrew, Edgar, and possibly John.
Amos (our grandfather) had four sons: Dan, William A., Lee (Robert Lee), and Edgar or Ed. He also had two daughters, Minnie and Maggie. Minnie married Charles Mathiasch, lived in Danville for years and then moved to Laclede, Missouri, and both died there, leaving two sons, Charles and Clarence.
Maggie married John Cadle and lived in Danville and Tilton, and both of them are deceased, as are all of the other brothers. Andrew went to Denver, Colorado, and started working in organizing workers into trade unions. There was a lot of trouble, and a big massacre and a number of them were killed and they are all buried in a big plot somewhere in Colorado.
Edgar had three children, a son Edgar and two daughters, Clara and Agnes. Edgar was the roving type and went from place to place and finally settled in Metropolis, Illinois, where he was interested in organizing unions, and was doing that until his death all around the southern part of the state.
There is another John Wilson, who is supposed to be the son of Jake Wilson. There is some question about this, because he is definitely a Wilson of Indian origin. He was a very rugged six foot four inches tall, weighing 240 pounds, and of brawny Indian features with the high cheek bones. A man that did not know his own strength. He was captain of a river boat that plied the Ohio and Mississippi rivers into the gulf of Mexico. He was known as Captain John Wilson, and known to be a very wealth man, dealing in transportation and auction of slaves. He is known to have had five ships plying the waters, and would stop at nothing. They were known as pirate ships. He is said to have hid his loot and stolen goods in some hidden cave around Cave-in-rock. He was run down and siezed and hanged somewhere on the shores of the Ohio or Mississippi rivers either in Kentucky or Ohio. His body was thrown overboard.
