Query: MCDUFFIE, LOCKE, CUMBAA, GEZELY, PROCTER, TAYLOR. Looking for any native american connection to my biological family. Both sides of my family are of Cherokee Ancestry. I was adopted, so I don't have all the basic knowledge. Looking for info on decendants of James McDuffie (or any of the McDuffie family from Coffee and Geneva Co, GA. Any connection to the LOCKE Family. Eva R. McDuffie, Married William Isaiah Locke. Josephine Cumbaa (also possibly Cambas, or Cambas-Wilkerson). Maternal side is GEZELY, (possibly Geesely, Geezely, Gesley.etc). Name was Mary Christine (Elizabeth) Gezely. Maiden Mary Christine(Elizabeth) Procter. Her Mother's name was FAIRY PROCTER. The Gezely-Procter connect somehow to the Taylor family and they are from the Kentucky-Tennessee area and can trace their roots back to the Trail of Tears (i dunno how). The Lockes, McDuffies are from Geneva and Coffee Counties in Georgia. They immigrated from Scotland in the 1800s.

Query: Would appreciate any thing that would help me and my Cousins verify stories heard through the years that our Great-Grandfather was full bloodied Cherokee. My Aunt, only one left on Dad's side still swears it is true (though she was only about 5 when he died). The earliest information I can find on him that is definitely true, is from the 1900 census. Although smudged, it appears he is listed as NICKLAS STRANGE, w/ children Mary A., Beecher M., Mitchell, Dock M., Itty O., and Etta L. In the 1910 and 1920 census, he is listed as Nick Strange. The 1910 census shows his wife as Jane ------. In all these census' they lived in the Dandridge area of Jefferson County, TN. Stories thru the years were that Nick (which we understood was short for Nicodemus) was full bloodied Cherokee, born around 1858 in Jefferson County TN. However, we can't find anything that would help verify this. Anything regarding Nick would be appreciated.

Na-Ni's parents were Na-Ni Cordey (1/2 blood)b ~ 1790, and Parker Collins (a white man). Na-Ni Collins' grandparents were Thomas Cordey (a white man), b ~ 1765 and Susannah Sonicooie, am Full Blood Cherokee woman of the Blind Savanah Clan (Wild Potato Clan). John's McMimms(Mimms)Cherokee name was "Black Hawk." He was well respected among the Cherokees in Tennessee and North Georgia. A daughter whose name was Rennie was born sometime around 1820. I recently learned this information. It could be that Rennie is my gg grandmother whose name was Rutha. Rennie could have been changed her 'familiar name' to a more English version, or simply take a Bible name. Bible names were very popluar in those days. Family lore passed down is that Rutha was Cherokee. Any information would be most appreciated. Thank you.

OTHER: birthdate 11/27/1883. Mother's maiden name: Berry Father's last name: Hicks born in Texas, married in Clovis, NM, on 2/14/16 to Otto W. Bobo; died in San Bernardino, CA on 8/11/1940 at age 56.

Darlene Steele
Query: My gg grandmother is said to have been Cherokee. I have a copy of a picture, and she does have Native American features. Many descendents including myself have searched for her parents and siblings for years, but with no luck. Her name was Rutha. She was born in 1817 somewhere in Tennessee. Rutha married my gg grandfather Elias Craft in Morgan County, Alabama in 1835. The Craft family lived in Monroe County, Tennessee before moving to Alabama. Census records show that Rutha was a weaver by trade, and that she could read and write. Rutha and Elias had several children with two sons named John Jasper and Joseph Craft. Rutha and Elias' marriage license shows McMinis or Minis as her maiden name. There were no McMinis living in the state of Alabama during the time period in which Rutha and Elias married. Rutha and Elias' oldest daughter's death certificate has McNeese as Rutha's maiden name while other siblings have their mother's maiden name as unknown. This is an age old mystery that no one up until this time has been able to solve. We have tried different variations for the spelling of McMinis, and that has gotten us no where. Many of Rutha's descendents have speculated on what the reason is that no one has been able to find her parents or siblings, but that is merely speculation. Any information would be helpful.

Query: My gg grandmother's name was Rutha McMinis. She was born in 1817 in Tennessee. She married my gg grandfather Elias Craft in 1835 in Morgan County, Alabama. The Craft family lived in Monroe County, Tennesse before moving to Alabama. Before that the Crafts lived in Darlington, South Carolina. Rutha is said to have been full-blooded Cherokee. I have a picture of her and she does in fact look Native American. No one has uncovered whom her parents or siblings were. There is speculation that her surname may have been Means instead of McMinis. Joseph and Mary Ann McMenis/Means married Alford siblings in Morgan County, Alabama. I haven't found out who their parents were and wonder if Rutha could possibly have been their sibling. I would appreciate any information.

Query: A distant Osbrn ancestor (of English origin) was kidnapped by the Susquehanock Indians Tribe in Baltimore Co., MD at about age 10. The date of the kidnapping varies but he was traded to the Cherokee and was raised, married, and became a "Chief". There are two facts that I have (1) Chief Osborn did sit at a treaty of 1744 in Lancaster, PA in the Houdensaunee Delegation, and (2)He was with Dragging Canoe in 1774. I have not been able to find his Indian name or any more history on him. At some point some of his ancestors did "return" to Maryland as my gggg-grandmother (Sarah (Osborn)Bush was his descendant. She had a son born on 23 Mar. 1768; her death was in May 1818. I believe her parents were John and Mary (Sullivan) Osborn, and her brothers were John Jr,. Joseph, and Daniel Sullivan. She married Wallace Creasman May 10, 1839 in Monroe County TN. My great grandfather (her grandson) told my mother that his mother and grandmother (Mary Jane and Biddie) were Cherokee and that Biddie had married a soldier assigned to the Cherokee removal (Wallace Creasman). Query: I am looking for the mother of Naomi Day Hill, who married into the Richey family of Bourbon County KY, Paris KY area. I have very limited information about my family, and no one wanted to admit to the Indian blood. There was supposed to be a picture of some sort of Naomi's mother sitting on a porch, in a rocker, smoking a corn cob pipe. She would be my great grandmother and supposedly Cherokee. I have some local help with genealogy, but we are coming up with nothing on names, and most of my family has passed away now.
