Janice Pettross
Query: In 1883, my great grandmother, Matilda Duncan Edwards, a young widow, lived in the Cherokee, Ravens Ford, NC, community. She had receintly married a man by the name of Queen. His children from a previous marriage did not accept her 3 year old son, David Fillmore Edwards, because his skin was 'dark'. She had no choice but to give her child away. A man by the name of Mac Jinkins, McJenkins, or some similar spelling, who was married to a full blooded Cherokee woman, took David to raise on/near the reservasion. At the age of ninteen, (and after possibly having sired a child by his foster mother) he returned to Ravensford, met and married Minnie Palistine Henson. They had 8 children. Minnie died when my mother (now 85) was 12. David died when Mama was 14. My mother is the last of her family except for a younger brother who was too young to remember his father. With her death, all my mother's family history will have died. I am looking for any information on the Mac Jenkins family. I want to know more about my grandfathers early years. Was he possibly Native American? My mother says no. They were 'black dutch'. She does not understand what black dutch is. She thinks they were Spanish/Dutch. I know better. My mother has high cheek bones, olive complexion, and at the age of 85 still has little grey hair. You can tell by looking at her that she is Native american. Any help in this direction will be greatly appreciated.

Query: I am looking for a Cherokee Woman with the Christian given name of Molli Smith I believe to be from Missouri. The only info I have is from an email sent by my mother: "Granddad was Wayne Harold Smith, his father unknown, his mother was Nellie Smith, unmarried. Nellie Smith’s father was Frank Smith and he actually raised granddad. Frank Smith’s name MIGHT have been Francis Major Smith…but I couldn’t verify that either. I don’t know Frank Smith’s father’s name, it could have been Benjamin Smith, but I was never able to verify that, so it could be easily wrong. He was married to a woman who was Cherokee Indian and was given the Christian name of Mollie. That’s all I know about her." The information is very vague all I know is this is on my grandmother's side who was from Missouri. Please help if you have any information.

Query: This is not exactly a geniology question. But does any one know if it's possable to find out exactly where the land is that was given to our ancestors at the break up of Indian Territoy? I know it was in Delaware District (Welch Ok.) That is where all my Grandmothers gen were born. But I'd like to pin point the "home" place. All of that gen. are gone now my mom too. I'm at the point in life I could maybe afford to buy back the "home" place.

Mike Surber
Query: Looking for info on the Tiners sometimes spelled Tyner from Tenn. My Grandfather Paul Tiner murphy was 1/8 Cherokee. His grandmother Sydney Tiner married his grandfather Benjamin Murphy March 6, 1856 in Ill. The tiner/tyner name is fairly common on the rolls censuses of the Cherokee. Sydneys father was Richard Tiner of Tenn. her mother was a Jenkins. This according to the history of Montgomery Co Kansass. I know that all on the Murphy earlier than this were white. So the Cherokee blood on that side of the family comes from the Tiners. Early records for "common" people in the Cherokee is sketchy at best. Any Tiner/tyners out there who may have info on them I would like to hear from you. On my Grandmothers side the Cherokee blood history is quite clear I have my Ggrandfathers orig. enrollment from 1907. That line I have going back into the 1730s as the family was quite famouse included several well known historical Chiefs people. My GGgrandmother walked "the trail" at age 16.

Query: I'm doing a background search on my grandfather. I believe he was left in care of his uncle in the El Paso area as a child, he was born in 1900 and is now deceased. He ran away from home supposedly because of severe treatment at the hand of his uncle and ended up in an orphanage. Because orphanage documents are usually sealed, I want to search for the name "Roundtree Mata", are there any rolls that pertain to texas cherokee. I know his family eventually settled in the santa barbara, ca area. He entered the army and served in the 31 div.

Amy K. Miller
Query: My gramma LOLA PEARL HILL/MILLER and her family, comes from Missouri, the names of which I am inquiring about is on my grandmother's side (she was Cherokee and so was her mother and father). The names are HILL and BAILEY. They came from Reynolds County, Mo. I know that there are relations to them in Tulsa, Ok. Area. Some of their relations started a restaraunt over the Turnpike, which is where the "World's Biggest MCDonalds" now exists. All I know is that these people in Tulsa (area) are my relations and they might have information on THOMAS ISIAH HILL or LAURA BAILEY HILL. I know that they were alive in the late 1890's and died in the early to late 60's.? THOMAS, I think was from Oklahoma (origionally), and LAURA'S family Tennessee to Oklahoma(?). My cousin TANYA HILL has done major searches on our Cherokee ancestors and I don't know if she has found a lot of important info. I was told that LAURA was enough Cherokee to be enrolled, she chose not to be, but I guess her siblings were. Or at least that is what I was told. I don't know what is true and what isn't. If there is someone who could help me out, it would be a dream come true. My Great Uncle DOYLE HILL frequented a lot of pow-wow's in Oklahoma, and seemed to be the only one of my relations that was really proud of our heritage, everyone says that he made up a lot of stuff though. I have been trying since I was very young to learn more but then give up. I have had so many people remark on my Cherokee resemblence it is too hard to just ignore it. As far as I know I am an eighth Cherokee but don't know for sure. If any one can help it would make a dream come true for me and my family. Any information will be more than I have, and greatly appreciated!

Cal Young Vann
Query: My maternal great grandfather was Jesse G Vann 13 June 1852 to 28 October 1907. I expect he is the son of James Denton Vann of Springplace, Georgia but he does not fit in the birth order of James D's wife, Rosannah Kethcart Vann, who had a daughter within 3 months of Jesse G's birthdate. He named his first born son James D. My first cousin, Ronald Toppy Vann, supposedly got his cards 6-8 years ago, but I don't know if he is a member of the Cherokee Nation or the Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee. He won't share with me; I'm a Yankee. Toppy was an NFL quarterback for most of the 1957 season and is a celebrity back in greater Chattanooga, where he lives; he likely had lots of help, likely recovered information from relatives thereabouts. Can you find out if he has citizenship in either the Cherokee Nation or the Georgia Tribe? His father, Eston Eugene Vann, was my mother's youngest of 4 brothers. I have my mother's and grandmother's death certificates . . . and my own birth certificate. Can you help me? I live in Mexico, have been here nearly 20 years. I will hope for your response.

Melanie Wycoff
Query: I am seeking information on my maternal grandmothers parentage. All she was able learn over 76 years is this: She does not know her birth name nor the names of her parents, heard one story of a native american mother and Caucasion father, another story involving murder of mother and outlaw father. Neither have panned out thus far. She was raised from 3 yo to 14 yo by the Darnell family in Oklahoma (guthrie?) was told she was a servant. An older native American woman "an old indian woman" came to the house one day at age 5 walked up to my grandmother and told her that her name was Lenore and nothing else. She did not know birth date so she gave picked the date 10/11/1912 so that she could remember it and she said that libra was what she thought herself to be. Old man Darnell molested her (probably entire childhood) she ran away at 14 and never looked back - she does remember one of the "sons" Joseph was kind to her he was probably 15-20 years older than her. (possible birth-father?) Where should I start, I have looked into the "stories" not much there, I have researched a small amount on the Darnell Family nothing much found. Looked into orphanages-but with no dates, names etc.. did not get far, doubt a legal adotpion took place, would the government apprentice out a servant at age of 3? Any guidance you can give will be great appreciated and welcome. Both my mother and myself have not gotten any further than my grandmother did (spent all her money after my grandfather passed away on looking, came up with possible name Gussie Blankenship (poss orphaned/abandoned girl) and last name of Baer. HElP! Thanks I think that is it.

Query: I am very excited to have found this forum! I have been researching family history for a couple of years now. Have hit a wall - my great grandmother, Martha Barbee born in AK 1883. Her parents: S.W. Barbee (TN 1847) and Josaphine (NC 1860). The records stop with the 1900 census. Siblings of Martha: Ollie V (born 1889 Choctaw Nat) and McClellan (born 1894 Cherokee Nat). 1910 census lists additional siblings Ed, Virr (? spelling) as well as nieces/neph Jim, William,Rina, Adros (? spelling) all born in OK between 1902-1909. In addition, McClellan's name is changed to George B. on 1910 record. One of Martha's own children, Gertrude Carey is listed on 1910 census b. 1903 Indian Territory.

I am confused because at the time of the 1900 & 1910 Census' they were in Scott County Lewis twp. AK, yet some of the children were born as stated above. Oral history has it that we are Cherokee through my grandmother's line. I am trying to confirm. Any help, comments, information is considered a major blessing.

Query: I have two possible Cherokee ancestors: the first is only a suspect. Elizabeth (last name unknown)married Yelverton Nevill about 1788 in Tryon/Rutherford Co., NC. She was born 29 Dec 1762, died 29 Nov with 1802 as best possible year. My second, for certian, Cherokee ancestor is the wife of Joseph Nevill who was the son of Yelverton and Elizabeth, above. Joseph married Elizabeth/Mary/Polly who was born in KY in the 1790s. They lived in TN and then moved to IL. This Elizabeth is frequently confused with the wife of Joseph B. Nevill who lived in TN. Any help on these two of my Grandmothers will be appricaited.
