Cindy Hofmeister Query: I'm helping my uncle locate his Cherokee ancestry before he dies. I have located in the 1920 Missouri census that my uncles family states Indian for race. It also states missouri mixed blood cherokee. This is the same for all his relatives that I located on the census. I could not locate any of the family in the 1900 Federal census. So I believe they may be on the NA census in Missouri. I have located them also in the 1910 census this census states they are white as well as the 1930 census stating they are white. My uncle has pictures of his ggrandfather in full Indian dress. His name is Oceander "Buck" Pepper. I have found articals online that also state that the family war raised in the Cherokee way. But I have had no luck finding this family in the Dawes Rolls. Can someone help me out as where to go from here. Oh I forgot the 1920 census has all family members with "32-4" above mixed blood. I believe this may be an indication of which tribe they belonged to. Does anyone know?

Later, in Tennesse or New York, he killed a man during a bare-knuckle boxing match so he fled to Montana (thus, supposedly, is why he was always elusive of his past). His nickname in Philipsburg, Montana was "Blackie." He was probably at least 1/2 Cherokee. Miriam Query: Some of my husband's family has long maintained that they are of Blackfoot Native American descent. I find the Native American part likely, just by their looks, but the Blackfoot part unlikely, since that tribe originated in the Northwest. Supposedly this family moved to Louisiana through Mississippi and Alabama in the 1800's and maybe 1700's, settling in the central part of Louisiana. That's, what, over 1000 miles from Blackfoot/Blackfeet territory? My mother-in-law was a strikingly beautiful woman, and in younger years resembled singer Lena Horne. Could this Blackfoot tribe be some sort of code name for a mixed race group? I feel ok abt asking since now, in 2004, it's not such an unusual thing to be of mixed race. People are increasingly proud of it, especially down here where so many people fall into that category. Thanks in advance for your answers.
