Query: My grandmother, Nancy Jane Hubbard was on 1900 Dawes Rolls, age 3. Her mother Charlotte Sanders Hubbard is also on the Dawes Rolls, age 29. Charlotte's sister Sallie Proctor was also on the Dawes Rolls. I am looking for Charlotte's parents and grandparents. I believe they were either Thomas and Elizabeth Sanders or Charles and Elizabeth Sanders. My great aunt said she remembers a picture of them (which I have a copy) always hanging in the home. She said she believes the woman was Elizabeth, but does not remember them. She was born in 1915 and they may have died before then and possibly before the Dawes Act as I cannot find a Thomas, Charles or Elizabeth within the age range in 1900. I am already a tribal member based on my grandmother and great grandmother's roll numbers, but I would like to know who my great great grandparents were. My grandmother's brothers were William and Thomas Hubbard. Her cousins were Sam M. Proctor, Eli Proctor, William C. Proctor, Walter Proctor, Mary J. Proctor and Charlie J. Proctor. The History of the Cherokee Indians, Old Families list a Thomas Jefferson Sanders married to an Elizabeth Bearpaw and a Charles Sanders married to a Elizabeth Jane Daniel? I know her maiden name was Sanders and my great aunt is fairly sure her mother's name was Elizabeth, but I cannot be certain.

Query: I am looking for information on my paternal grandmother's family. Her name was Meisssa Mae Lackey, born May 23,1895, near Little Switzerland, North Carolna. She died May 19, 1949 near Shelby North Carolina. I have always been told she was 1/2 Cherokee Indian. Lackey is her maiden name. She married Avery Clarence Doty, and they had three children. I do not know her parents names. They both died when she was about 10 years old and she went to live with family friends. My aunt has a deed to land that was given to her mother (Melissa Mae Lackey) by the government when she was a child, apparently due to her being an orphan of Cherokee heritaqe. My father and aunt once looked into finding the property many years ago, but the land had been settled on and sold and re-sold many times. I give this information only in case there is some record that could help to find her parents names as my husband and I have been researching our family histories for several years, and this is a branch of the family we have little information on. Any help would be much appreciated.

My ggggrandfather James Burnett (b. 1846 d. ca 1905) was reported by his youngest children to have attended some sort of tribal council a few times a year where the Cache and White Rivers met (possibly in Arkansas or Illinois). The line now is Ashley Keller, Anthony Keller, David Keller, then Cecil Keller. The older people in my family that would know this are not saying anything. Query: I am looking for information regarding Richard Childers (1859-1891 d. Pryor Creek, Indian Territory). I am trying to confirm the family story that he is 1/2 Cherokee. Richard married Lucy Anna Ackley (5/24/1864 Cameron, Marshall, West Virginia-d. Feb 1888 Catoosa, Indian Territory, Oklahoma). Lucy died in childbirth. Their son, Henry Samuel Childers was raised on "the reservation for 10 years until Richard died in 1891" then Henry was raised by the Ackley family. Lucy's parents were Samuel Ackley and Sarah Rush Ackley. According to my cousin, Henry Samuel Childers was 1/4 Cherokee. My problem is that I can't find a death certificate for Richard Childers or anything proving he was 1/2 Cherokee. I am not sure where the family lived or what "reservation" they are referring to. Kay Hamilton
Query: I am researching the Cherokee connection on my mother's side of our family tree. We have always heard that we had Cherokee in our history. If this is indeed true, and I believe it is - there are family members with many features that could certainly be considered Indian - then it would be a wonderful addition to our family tree. I have our genealogy back as far as Elizabeth J. Bench Arnold - my ggg grandmother, born about 1823/25. Elizabeth's father was Christopher Bench, born about 1780/84, died 1840 (his father was Daniel) and it is Christopher's wife that we believe is Sarah Marsh (Mash) and she is suppose to be Cherokee - or at least part Cherokee. They lived in eastern Tennessee, but Christopher was born in NC, and they were married in VA, and the earliest children were born there. They then moved to TN. We also have info that indicates that Christopher was a preacher. We think that Sarah's father was Wilson Marsh (Mash). Possibly related to this is the Indian name of "Morningstar" - a female ancestor. We don't have a first name. Does anyone have any information or recommendations on how I might go forward with this search. I would really like to make the Cherokee (or other Indian family) connection. Our family has always talked about it for so long - it would be really a special event to be able to trace it and know for sure. Thank you all in advance for any response. Even a small bit of info might help.

She had three known children, Marion Thomas Willis b abt 1854 MO, Sarah Ann Willis b. abt 1860 AR, and Mary Melcina Willis b 6 Apr 1863, MO. Per Michael's Civil War Pension application, his wife died abt 1865 at the home of her brother in Benton Co. AR. He went there and returned to MO with their children and married Rhoda Johnson Howard a widow in 1867. The new blended family is found on the 1870 census in Sarcoxie, Jasper Co, MO. Another woman was living in the home of unknown connection, an Amy Moore age 56. I have searched Benton Co AR and MO have not found any trace in 1850 or 60 census for Michael or his family. I also cannot find any trace of Michael's origins. He may also have been of Cherokee blood? Our family always held that Mary Melcina was half Cherokee. I have also traced the desc. of Marion Thomas Willis to include a Bessie who married a Graham who is on Dawes. She however was not given citizenship.

Query: Maybe you can help me with some information. My great great grandmother's name was Rebecca Goodson O'Neal. She was married to Joseph O'Neal on August 5, 1863, in Putnam County, Indiana. Rebecca died at age 50, on February 14, 1887 in Belle Union, Indiana. I only know of two children, but there are probably more. A son, Ore O'Neal, which married Georgia A. Kivett on Feb 3, 1897, in Hendricks County, Indiana and my great grandmother, Mary O'Neal, who married Frank King in Putnam county, Indiana on May 8, 1889. Supposedly, Rebecca was a full blooded or perhaps half American Indian. I don't know which tribe, but it is believed to be one from the Oklahoma territory perhaps Chickasaw, Choctaw, or Cherokee. Have you ever heard of Rebecca? If so, do you have anymore information?

Query: My Mason and Collin's ancestors have been here in Va. since the 1600's, we always heard there was Indian on our Mason side, and I have been doing my Collins gen. for 10 yrs. I see both names in many Indian surname lists, but have not been able to link to anyone specific. I had a cousin named Pocahontas Mason who died in 1870 in VA. and her cousin was described as dark eyes and hair, but can anyone suggest any other options for me to look at? Here in VA. we also had the Samuel Plecker problem in the 1900's, along with the slavery issue, so any paper proof is very hard to find, I may go back to the court house and try census records again or marriage records, any suggestions are appreciated, I need to look at records that would have listed color, such as mulatto, one friend told me that he has never seen Indian on any of the old court house record books! I believe that if there is any Indian in our family, it would be Powhatan or Cherokee, or both.
