Sandy Scofield
Query: My Great, Great, Great Grandparents were James Jackson Reavis/Revis/Reeves, Mary Elizabeth Williams. They were married in Cherokee County Georgia in 1844. James Jackson Reavis died around 1908 in Texas. Their Grand daughter (my great Grandmother) Martha Jane "Revis" Miller, told the family that her Grandmother Elizabeth Williams Reavis was Cherokee. Other descendants (from other children of James Jackson Reavis and Elizabeth) have said that they were told the same thing. I have been told that Martha Janes father-Tom Reavis, passed as white, but even so, the descendants have said he had a terrible time growing up. I am sure that any one who has Indian, or Black blood, knows what that feels like. I only experienced it a few time in my life, when I was in Junior High, and the Mexican kids called my halfbreed (I have NO idea how they knew I was part "maybe" Indian, it was not something the family spoke of), and when I lived in Corsicana, Texas, in the years 1983-1985. The locals would look at me, and tell me I was from Oklahoma, that I was one of them Cherokees. I have not found ANY proof that Martha Jane's Dad and Grandmom were Cherokee. I can't find any information on Elizabeth Williams prior to her marriage to James Jackson Reavis, I have no idea what her parents names were. NOW- my Mom's cousin JoAnn in Oklahoma was just told by my Grandmother's sister Sybil that her Grandmother was Indian. Her name was Mary Ester Rushing, she married Joseph Edward Brennan in Coffee County Georgia.

HOW do we find records on people, whom MAY have been Indian, but who obviously do not have any records of this ?? (I have already been "flamed" for trying to find out why my Dad and Grandfather Miller both got checks from 1946-1957, for small amounts each, $8-$15, and told the checks were for garden tools they never received, I made the mystake of asking if these could have been annuity payments, and got ripped apart for suggesting that any Cherokee got anything, ever). Would appreciate any "positive" help, or suggestions. Please, if you are of Indian heritage, do not use my query as an excuss to Attack/Flame. I am simply trying to find out who my ancestors were, so my children and their children know who their ancestors were. Thank you in advance for any positive help I may be blessed in receiving.

Query: I'm looking for information relating to Leanawake, William Bob (or Babb or Babbs), George Martin, and Annie Martin. The Dawes report lists William Bob and Leanawake as parents of Annie Martin. Annie Martin (Cherokee Roll No. 31668; Delaware Roll No. 1038) was my great-grandmother. Family lore says William Bob and Leanawake lived on a farm near Fort Smith, Arkansas. They were supposedly descendants of settlers who settled around Fort Smith after traveling over the Trail of Tears around 1838. Both died along with many other Cherokee living near Fort Smith in the late 1800s (from an epidemic?). Leanawake died shortly after giving birth to Annie, who was brought as an infant to Oklahoma Indian Territory. She married George Martin and was 19 years old, living near Dewey Oklahoma (just north of Bartlesville) by the time she was enrolled by the Dawes Commission. She died at Claremore Indian Hospital in Oklahoma about 1957. I know very little else about any of these persons; any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

Query: I am blond haired and blue eyed, but still I do have Indian roots in my ancestors. That has nothing to do with what I need you or someone to know about. The digging of a somewhat burial ground. In Tennessee along the clinch river just befor Claiborne county the government began building a four-lane highway and they found they were digging the graves of Indians. For some reason they are going ahead with the road and from what I understand it is being studied by archiologist or somthing like that. What I don't understand is the road can easily detor this area, why is it possible to do this? How can anyone have the right to disturb a grave? I know the governmant is very powerful but just because this is a small town where most people are not concered I think it is wrong and should be stopped before they keep going any further. My question is what can we do? I am very serious. I would like some answers if you know more about how the law works in these matters.

Query: I am looking for information on how/where I can find out about Cherokee adoptions between the years 1874 and 1880. I am searching for information on 'Maud Stubbs' and am hoping that she was legally adopted around the year 1880. There is a book published on 'Stubbs Genealogy' listing her birth year as 1880 which is incorrect. Her 'parents' had a son in 1874 who died that same year and I've been able to research and prove he was not a twin. I have found her listed on the Federal Census for 1880 with this family lising her age as 6 years old, birthplace Massachusetts. I have done a lot of research and cannot find a record of her birth in Massachusetts between 1874 and 1880 but ironically, Massachusetts remains listed as her birthplace on the Fed. Census until 1920 which states her birth place as "United States." I still have probate name change records I can research at the Archives in Boston but I'm hoping that other sources are available to research.

Query: Looking for my gr x 2 grandfather, Charles H. Davis, who was reportedly to be Cherokee. His parents were from Virginia or Tennessee. He served in the Union Army and was mustered out at Fort Gibson at the end of the Civil War. He became a school teacher traveling among the Five Civilized Tribes as far west as Wewoka. He married one of his first students, Emmeline Jefferson. They had three children, George Davis, Mattie Davis and Charles H. Davis. They settled in Cane Creek Community (20 miles west of Muscogee, Oklahoma) inside the Creek Nation. He died two months prior to his last child's birth August 29 1882. As you can see this would be too early for the Dawes Rolls and I have not been able to find his name on any of the other rolls. I've tried contacting Fort Gibson for records but received no answer. Does anyone have any suggestions of how might I obtained school records from after the Civil War?
