Lynn McDevitt
Query: As the story goes, my great great grandmother was Cherokee. Her name was Annie McGraw, she married John Lake on January 28, 1878 in Collin County, Texas. The records start and stop there for Annie. Thats all we know. We do know that John Lake's father (John Lake) was a farmer in New York after coming to the US in approx 1866-68, but we have no records of the McGraw side before the date of marriage. The thought of an Indian woman in our family causes arguments with half the family to this date, so its hard to get any facts. My grandmother says its possible that Annie changed her name, under the circumstances back then. If anyone knows anything, or could guide me it would be appreciated. It really doesn't matter if I can prove it or not - I am proud of my Cherokee heritage. The more I study and learn, the more proud I am. I hope to hear from someone.

John Robertson
Query: My wife is the genealogist, so bear with me, I just poke around trying to help. REf: Day, Juriah, b. abt 1799/Virginia? d. before 1860, Howell Co./Douglas Co. Missouri. Some time in the past I found a site, but can't find it again. I am trying to find information on a (reported) Cherokee woman, married to David Collins, and living in/near Marion County, Indianapolis, IN., in 1822. (I know, I should have bookmarked it!) On the site I found a file that I downloaded, that didn't make any sense to me, but had a number of mentions with the name Juriah Day. Running thru the list I found several references that (I think) indicated that she was indeed of Indian heritage. Somehow I have lost that file. We have positively traced my wifes line back to Juriah Day through the Collins line(s). Family history says that she was a full blooded Cherokee woman. (Currently the Saponi Indians say that she is of the Saponi line. ---they also said the Cherokee is just a generic name for Indian - I find this a bit hard to believe, considering that I have read up on the Cherokee to some extent, and they were [are] a major Indian Nation!) The reference to Indlps Indiana comes from documented data that David Collins and Juriah day had a daughter, Ruhaney Collins, born in that area.

Ref: Ruhaney Collins, b. 10-20-1822, Indlps IN Marion Co. d. 1-2-1899, Pottersville, Howell Co., MO. I have come to a complete stop trying to find the parents/ancestors of Juriah Day. The site I found stopped with Juriah when displaying the ancestors. I tried to Email the writer from the address that was listed, but it came back as invalid. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Respectfuly, John Robertson 7091 E. Ebenezer Lane Olney, IL 62450. Emails are best.

Query: How do I go about researching to see if my Grandmother (deceased) was half or more Cherokee as she said? She was born Adzel Edna Hoyt, July 20, 1899 in Indian Territory (Oklahoma), her Father and Mother were Edgar John and Sarah Caroline (Johnson) hoyt which gives one the usual assumption that she would not be NA, however; she told several of us that she was Cherokee and showed me photos of herself as a teen/young adult standing with about 6 NA Ladies stating they were her closest (in fact ONLY friends due to distance of homesteads), until the later years of her life when she adamantly denied being NA, and burned all photos she had of the time. She always told us her name (translated) was Edna Edna as her Mother wanted to name her Edna but her Father preferred the Cherokee form of that name (Adzel). She met my Grandpa in OK and married him when he was working in th oil fields (Section 8). All their children were born there except the youngest of 7 who was born in Texas. My Mother was born in Hominy. Tanks for any help you can give me.

Query: I am looking for the family of my great-grandfather, Henry McCracken. I know he was born c. 1850-1954 and raised somewhere in Oklahoma. I have been told his mother was a Cherokee named Samantha Love and that she died at his birth. His father was named Eli on his death certificate, but I am not sure of that. He was raised by his Cherokee grandparents. I cannot find him on the Dawes report, but know that he must be listed somewhere because when oil was discovered on Indian lands they came to south Texas where he was living and tried to get him to go back to Oklahoma to claim his share. I know that his grandfather was a "tame" Indian and bred prized race horses. Family stories say he was a minor chief. It was Henry's job to care for the horses and one night they were attacked by "wild" Indians and the horses stolen and barns burned. Henry presumed all his family to be killed and was so afraid he jumped on a horse and headed south, never looking back. I would love to make a connection with my Cherokee heritage and if any of this is familiar to you, please contact me.

All confirming data has us back to a supposedly fullblooded Cherokee woman, Juriah Day. b. c 1799, in Virginia. d. Before 1860, Howell c./Douglass Co. MO. m. Collins, David, 1/11/1822, Knox Co. KY (Barborville). Children: Ruhaney Collins (F) 10/20/1822, Daniel Collins (M) c. 1825, Aaron Collins (M) c. 1828, Leonard H. (Toady) Collins (M) c. 1831. Every thing up to to this person is documented, and claimed to be of the Saponi Nation. However, family history says she was fullblooded Cherokee. I found her on an "all things Cherokee" site, an downloaded a file that I believe may be one of the "rolls" but may be the researchers file data I cannot find that page again, and when I tried emailing the party it was returned as "undeliverable" I would like to surprise her with the stile over that stone wall.

I am trying to prove this and I need information to do so. In Cherokee By Blood Vol.#4 my gggggrand mother and her mother are both discussed. On page 274 it states that Henry Jackson Holcomb does not know the name of the parents of his said grandmother, Annie Townsend, except that her surname was Taylor and does not know where they were living in 1835. Query: Family names: Waitman, Rice, Rowin, Poindexter.
My grandad is Albert Porter Waitman and he is 95 years old. He has said for years that his mother always told them that they were Indian but they couldn't tell anyone. I know this happened alot with this period of time. I always thought that we were problably Choctaw or Chickasaw because we live in southeastern Oklahoma. He told me the other day that his mother said they were Cherokee. We don't know much about my grandad's family. His father died when he was 6 and his name was Samuel James Waitman. His mother said it was on her side, her name was America (Mary) Frances Rice. She was the daughter of William. Nancy (Poindexter) Rice. We believe that William was born in Illinois and Nancy in Kentucky. William's parents were John and Ann (Rowin) Rice. John was supposedly born in Virginia. John and Ann were married in Vermillion Co. Ill. on March 25, 1830. My grandad was born in Grayson Co. Texas in 1906. He was told by his mother that her family had come to Texas in a covered wagon sometime after the war. They supposedly came from Missouri. We have also be asked about being related to the outlaw Red Buck Waightman. I have meet with another Waitman family around Ok. City that also believe the same thing. We think that we are related because of a common connection. Any help would be appreciated.
