Ilana Ransenberg-Priest
Query: My husband is @ 1/4 cherokee. His father (Clayton Jay [Howard] Priest) just passed in 13 April 1999. Clayton's father was Lee Priest, his mother was Amelia McCanna. Amelia was Lee's second wife; his first was an Indian 'squaw' named Pearl. They had 1 child, Roy (1914), before Lee remarried. Not much has been said about their history. Clayton told me that his father would get government land and break some wild mustanges and then sell out and do it again elsewhere. Clayton married Lola Marcellus and they lived in Denver, Colorado. Clayton's birth certificate shows his middle name to be Jay. His middle name was changed to Howard prior ro his enlistment in the army during WWII. Clayton's grandfather was Charles Priest born in 1861; his grandmother was Dora (Dollie) Adell Howard. Clayton's middle name was changed to Howard when a male "Howard" cousin died from a strange disease that caused the gradual hardening of his muscles, eventually hardening his heart muscle causing death. Clayton told me that his cousin turned into a stone and died. Clayton was ashamed of his Native American background and would only talk about it when drunk. Clayton was born on 4 July 1922 and died in Arizonia, on 13 April 1999. Clayton never said his name was on any Roll of the Nations; so he never followed through on getting any documentation.

Query: I am trying to verify the Cherokee heritage of my grandmother Hannah Spence of Miami, Kanawha county, West Virginia. This is her married name. I am unsure of her maiden name but it may be Hannah Ball or Hannah Baugh. It seems that her records were destroyed in a fire at the county courthouse so I am told, but even this is uncertain. She was born November 15, 1889 and died June 15, 1969. She was very quiet about her heritage and never would admit it to anyone, she was ashamed though I don't understand why. If anyone has any information please e-mail it to me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Alma Rice
Query: Like so many, my mother was part Cherokee. Her father insisted that she and her brother never tell anyone they were part Indian after their mother died when they were small. They never knew anything about their mother's people, except she had a brother who left Arkansas and supposedly died in Oklahoma (?) I have found there was Cherokee lands between White River and the Arkansas River before ARkansas was a state. Most of the Cheokees went over into Oklahoma or down to Texas afterward. My ancestor, having married a white settler, remained in Arkansas until her death. As a result of the above, she, or my mother and uncle, were never put on the Dawes Roll. The Cherokee blood remains however and if anyone knows if the clan system was in effect with the Cherokee's living in this area before Arkansas statehood, and if so, the clan that was living around the White River area in Boone County Arkansas? Even if my siblings and myself do not know our Cherokee ancestor's maiden name (or Indian name) and as a result have little hope of being able to belong officially to the Cherokee nation (hopefully, we will be able to) we are proud of our Native American heritage and have made sure it is written into our family history for future generations. Best of luck to all who are searching their Indian ancestory. Wado

Query: Looking for any information regarding the name "Mcdonald". This was my grandmothers maiden name and she was from Childersburg Alabama. Her father was Wiley Mcdonald and her mother's maiden name was Olia Bowman. I know my grandmother was 1/2 or more Cherokee blood but I have not been able to make any connections. I found the Mcdonald name on the original rolls during the move of the tribes to the west. Also, if anyone has info. On the name "Hudgins", there is Native American on that side of the family. I did find the name on a census and if I can remember it was in the late 1820's or the early 1830's. I also remember seeing a picture my grandmother showed me when I was young and the man and woman and child in the photo were in native american dress. He wore some kind of head dress.

Charles Todd Apple
Query: I need to know my Indian heritage for my and my children's sake. Mind you, NOT for any sort of benefits as much as for the spiritual peace of mind and the deep desire to know who I really am.
1. My father Charles (Chuck) Norman Apple is Oklahoma Cherokee but of unknown blood percentage. He died in 1999 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 61. He was in the U.S. Navy for many years off and on and is buried at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.
2. His father Norman Charles Apple died around 1980 in Oklahoma.
3. His mother Geraldine Sitter (Apple) died a few years after that.
4. My mother is living and is of limited Cherokee decent -- again ukn. percentage. She is alive in Sand Spings OK.
5. Her father Guy B. Davenport died a few years ago in Tulsa Oklahoma. Her mother Lura Davenport died in 1999 also in Tulsa OK.
The family never researched or kept records of the Indian heritage -- for prejudiced and other awful reasons.
