Query: I am looking for information on any Cherokee links to the US families Bertand and Lemire. I know Edouard Lemire fought for the Union army and died in Canada about 1920. I know Azilda Bertand was born 1850+ in US and married (1st wife) Edouard Lemire. Family history says that there was a very recent Amerindian connection, but unfortunately all family papers were burned at the beginning of this century so that Edouard's daughters would not carry Indian cards. Edouard and Azilda and their children were granted a claim in Colorado after the Civil War. They were the only family which escaped the local massacres (due, it is said to Azilda's amerindian connections) and they fled back to the Vermont/Quebec area, where the family stayed settled.

I understand that descendants of James Monroe Goodwin claimed their head rights for property in Oklahoma and I would think that this would be of record in the files in Tahlelquah.
