Query: Samuel Volner born ca 1750-60 married a Cherokee woman named Cynthie Knife. Samuel was born in Germany and the first record that I have been able to find on him is in Barren County, Kentucky in 1808. He lived in that part that later was taken to create Allen County and lived on or near Long Creek and Trammel Creek. Because of Walker's line this area later became part of Macon County, Tennessee. He was a charter member of the Testament Primitive Baptist Church near Gap of the Ridge, Tennessee in 1812. His name is sometimes written as "Walner" or "Wolner". According to the 1906 Eastern Cherokee Applications of his descendents, he was recognized as a member of the Cherokee Nation due to his marriage to Cynthie Knife, a full-blooded Cherokee. The applications state that both Samuel and Cynthia died before the Trail of Tears. Their children William, Samuel, Thomas, and Benjamin lived in Tennessee; however, I can not locate any of the Volners on any census whatsoever in Tennesee or Kentucky until 1840 when William Volner was found on the Robertson County, Tennessee census. Family tradition states that some of his children were born in Sweetwater, Tennessee (Monroe County). I have been unable to find hardly anything on these folks, nor can I find them on any Cherokee census records. I know that William Volner married Mary Polly Weeks (Wix) in 1817 in Sumner County, Tennessee (now Macon County) and that they were for a time in Johnson County, Illinois where they signed a petition along with William's father Samuel. Samuel was on the 1820 Johnson County, Illinois Census (at the end of the census in an addendum list). Samuel's grandson, John Volner, who lived in Texas County, Missouri, states in his Cherokee Application that his father, William Volner left Robertson County, Tennessee in 1851 and journeyed to Turnback Mountain where he stopped "with the rest of the refugees" and turned back to Union County, Illinois where he intended to "make crop" and then go on to the Nation, but he stayed there. Where is Turnback Mountain"? Who was Cynthie Knife? There was a Cherokee listed on the 1817 Cherokee Census listed at Sail Creek called "The Knife". Were Cherokee children given as their last name the first name of their father? How do you say 'Knife' in Cherokee?

I have been told that he married a Cherokee woman whose name no one knows. He was rumored to be a horse thief. When the local law found him he changed his name to Lish. Also, I know that Martha Ann Payne is related to me somehow, because I remember my grandmother telling me when I was just a small boy but I can't remember how. I did find her in the 1851 Drennen & Chapman Eastern Cherokee Roll but it was on a surname page of that roll and there was no one else with that surname on it. My grandmother also told me that Martha's Indian name was Crain. This is all I can remember and, as previously mentioned, I was very young when told so memory might not be totally accurate. My parents divorced when I was 11 years old and my father and I were not close after that. I am Cherokee on my father's side and would really like to know more about my "roots". I was very close to my grandmother before she died, but she died when I was very young. My children are in elementary and high school and want to know more about their Cherokee Heritage too. We have just recently gotten our CDIB cards but want to know more about our family and our Cherokee Heritage. We live in Kansas City, Missouri and don't know where to go here to find out this information. Any information on my family would be greatly appreciated.
