Trail of Tears National Historic Trail Video
The National Park Service, in collaboration with the Cherokee Nation, produced a video which tells the story of the Trail of Tears from the Cherokee perspective. The 30-minute documentary was written by Cherokee Nation citizen Shane Smith, and tells the story of the Cherokee families who experienced the Trail of Tears, often telling the story in the Cherokee language. It is a great video, and well worth watching as we solemnly mark the 175th anniversary of one of the darkest events in American history. You can watch the video here:

Pea Ridge National Military Park
The Battle of Pea Ridge, March 7 & 8, 1862, was the first battle of the Civil War in which Indian troops participated. About 1,000 Cherokee, the 1st and 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles, fought for the Confederate Army led by Brigadier General Albert Pike. During the battle, these two Cherokee regiments routed two companies of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry. Stand Watie, a Cherokee Colonel, commanded the 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles.
