Robert Conley -- Cherokee Wordsmith
by Christina Berry
How many US writers can say that their work has been translated and published in Macedonian? Well how many of those writers can also say that their work has been published in Cherokee? Robert Conley can.
Robert Conley is a talented and celebrated Cherokee writer. He has written over 30 books, many about Cherokee people including Sequoyah, Zeke Proctor, and Ned Christie. In addition, he has been awarded the Western Writers of America 'SPUR' award three times. The Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers named him Wordcrafter of the Year in 1997 and he was also named Oklahoma Writer of the Year in 1999. In 2000, he received a Cherokee Medal of Honor from the Cherokee Honor Society and June 12, 1993 was proclaimed Robert J. Conley Day by the mayor of Wichita Falls, TX.
Conley is a a member of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma and lives in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He is a great voice (if a voice can be written) for the Cherokee people because he is so good at bringing the names and dates of the past to life. He also brings a Cherokee perspective to the subject matter. So put down those US history books that describe Ned Christie as an outlaw and pick up Conley's book. His latest work is a biographical novel about Sequoyah -- the inventor of the Cherokee syllabary.
