This is the fourth article in the series "Guess Who's a Cherokee." Check each month to find a new Cherokee profiled. Some are obvious while some will really surprise you. Hope you enjoy. Will Rogers Will Rogers is possibly one of the most quoted people in America. He's the one who said, "I never met a man I didn't like" and that's just one of countless quotables. Rogers was born in 1879 Cooweescoowee District, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, the youngest of eight children. He first started to exhibit his star quality with roping tricks. It was his skill with a rope that got him listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, jobs with Wild West shows, and opened the door to vaudeville. His rope tricks got him to the stage but it was his humor that made him a hit. Will Rogers went on to become a Broadway star, act in over 70 films (both with and without sound), become a well known radio commentator, write thousands of syndicated newspaper columns and six books, and visit the White House. Will Rogers was well loved in his day and in 1934 he was voted the most popular male actor in Hollywood. As popular and famous as he became he never forgot where he came from -- maintaining close ties with the Cherokee people and spending lots of time on his ranch in Claremore, Oklahoma.
