Guess Who's a Cherokee -- Rita Coolidge
by Christina Berry

This is the first of a new series called "Guess Who's a Cherokee." Each month I'll do my best to profile another Cherokee celebrity. Some, like Rita, are obvious but some will really surprise you. Hope you enjoy.

Rita Coolidge

With a voice that's been described as sultry, sexy, mesmerizing, enthralling, relaxing, soothing, and pure, it's no wonder that this talented Cherokee singer/songwriter's music career has spanned more than three decades. Her style ranges from rock, pop, and folk to R&B, country, and gospel. She has had several hit singles including "All Time High" from the James Bond movie Octopussy and "We're All Alone."

In the 1990s, Rita teamed with her sister Priscilla Coolidge and her niece Laura Satterfield to form the Native American pop group Walela. The group draws on its Cherokee heritage and sings several songs in Cherokee. The group performed at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Rita was recently awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native American Music Awards.
