Artist Description: This building was build for the Cherokee Female Seminary after the first school burned in 1887. This Seminary campus opened in 1889. My great-grandmother was a student of the Seminary when it was in this building, and her sister, Aunt Callie, was a teacher at the building. Callie later went on to receive her PhD in history and became the first Oklahoma Indian woman to receive a PhD. Needless to say, this building symbolizes a lot for my family and serves as a tangible connection to the women of my Cherokee family.
