Artist Description: This design is called a sun circle. The pre-European contact ancestors of the Cherokee used many variations of the sun circle. They used this design to decorate pottery, as well as stone and shell carvings. This icon was very important to them and symbolizes both the power of the sun as well as the power of the ceremonial fire. This beaded medallion is made using traditional early-19th century Cherokee beading techniques and materials.
